LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The final two spots in the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament are up for grabs this upcoming week as Centenary, Southwestern and Schreiner all punched their tickets last week into the postseason.
Texas Lutheran (15-7, 10-3) secured a 73-62 victory against Dallas (9-14, 6-8) last Friday in the Bulldogs lone game of the week. Sebastian Andrade scored a game-high 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and collected two steals in the win. TLU closes out its regular season schedule with three consecutive home games and can capture its first SCAC Regular Season Title since the 2015-16 season by winning at least two of those competitions.
Johnson & Wales (17-7, 10-5) split a pair of road SCAC contests last weekend, defeating Austin College on Friday, before falling to Centenary on Saturday. In the win, senior Jontrell Herman poured in a season-high 35 points and the Wildcats tied season-highs in both rebounds (46) and blocks (6).
Centenary (12-11, 9-5) has strung together its first three-game winning streak of the season and vaulted itself up the standings following victories over Dallas, Colorado College (7-17, 3-12) and JWU last week. Senior Treylan Matthews averaged 23.7 points per game last week, including a career-high 34-point outing in the win over CC and then hit the game-winning shot with 1.6 seconds left to lift the Gents over JWU.
Southwestern (11-11, 8-5) went 1-1 in SCAC road contests last week, falling to Schreiner on Tuesday before knocking off Trinity (5-18, 5-9), 92-76, on Saturday. Brandon Alexander scored 25 points in the win as the junior has registered 20 or more points in five of his last six games. Southwestern has shot 50 percent or better as a team for three-straight games and the 92 points is the most scored by a Pirates team at TU in the SCAC era.
Schreiner (12-11, 8-6) has won three-straight for the third time this season and is now 7-2 in its last nine games after defeating Southwestern and Dallas last week. Matthew Rindahl averaged 19.5 points and 10 rebounds per game to lead the Mountaineers. The sophomore has led Schreiner in rebounding for five consecutive games.
Austin College (8-15, 4-10) snapped its five-game skid by defeating Colorado College, 74-68, last Saturday. Devin Roland paced AC with 20 points in the win. The ‘Roos shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range and improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season when shooting 40 percent or better from long distance.
The SCAC men’s basketball regular season wraps up this Sunday when Centenary travels to take on Texas Lutheran. The final seeds for the conference tournament will be determined this week and will be released once the regular season schedule officially comes to a close on Sunday.
