LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Just over two weeks remain until the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off in Seguin, Texas and host Texas Lutheran became the first team to secure its spot in the postseason, while the rest of the standings remain tight down the stretch.
TLU (14-7, 9-3) saw its six-game winning streak snapped on the front end of its Colorado road trip this past weekend, falling to Johnson & Wales, 83-69, on Friday. The Bulldogs would clinch their sixth-straight SCAC Tournament berth on Saturday however, following a 14-point win at Colorado College. Jacob Kouremetis led the way with 19 points and five rebounds. TLU has now won seven of its last eight and 11 of its last 13.
Johnson & Wales moved its winning streak to three after defeating TLU on Friday and completing the weekend homestand sweep with thrilling 97-95 victory over Southwestern (10-10, 7-4) on Saturday. Trailing by three with just over five minutes left, the Wildcats mounted a 14-5 run to regain the lead for good and hold on to the win over the Pirates. Andrew Romero III led the way for the Wildcats, averaging 32.5 points per game on a remarkable 62.5 percent (20-for-32) shooting.
Centenary (9-11, 6-5) split a pair of road league games last week, defeating Schreiner by five in overtime on Friday before falling to Trinity on Saturday. In the win, Treylan Matthews score seven of his game-high 20 points in overtime and added four rebounds, one assist and one steal to pace the Gents.
Dallas posted a perfect 2-0 week and has now won three of its last four following a 17-point road victory against Austin College (7-14, 3-9) last Tuesday and then stepping outside of conference play to earn a 89-70 win at home against Southwestern Adventist on Saturday. The Crusaders combined to hit 52.1 percent (62-for-119) of their shots last week and have now won eight-straight games when hitting 40 percent or better from the field. Michael Wambsganss sparked the Crusaders combining for 39 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to lead Dallas.
Schreiner (10-11, 6-6) improved to 5-2 over its last seven games after a 2-1 winning week last week, with wins over Trinity, 83-55, and Austin College, 66-56. The 15 three-point field goals made in the win over Trinity marked a season-high and both wins came on the heels of solid defensive performances limiting its opponent to under 60 for the first two times all season. Matthew Rindahl continued his stellar play averaging 13.3 points, 12 rebounds and one assist per game last week for the Mountaineers.
Trinity (5-17, 5-8), in the midst of a four-game homestand, won two of three games last week, picking up a weekend sweep against Austin College on Friday and Centenary on Saturday. Jordan Lippman was key in both wins, with a team-high 17 points in the win against the ‘Roos and then scoring seven of his 14 points during a crucial 9-2 run after the game was tied with 5:15 left in the victory against the Gents. The Tigers will look for its first three game winning streak of the season when they host Southwestern on Saturday.
Colorado College (7-15, 3-10) snapped its three-game skid following an 88-78 win at home against Southwestern last Friday night. CooXooEii Black poured in 23 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Tigers in victory. The 23-point effort marked the ninth time this season Black has registered 20 or more points in a contest.
SCAC men’s basketball action continues this week as the race for the conference tournament continues to take shape with two games scheduled on Tuesday, three on Friday and four on Saturday .
