AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College
improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in SCAC play by sweeping Hendrix
and Millsaps over the weekend. The ’Roos took a seven point
halftime lead and managed to hold off the Warriors in
Friday’s 82-72 game with Kyle Lintelman scoring 17 points to
lead the way for AC. Lintelman was joined by three others in double

three treys. Kola Alade paced the ‘Roos with 16 points and
Straley finished with 12. Lintelman had 11 points, five rebounds

Birmingham-Southern remained perfect this week
with a 3-0 record with wins over Pensacola Christian and SCAC foes
Centre and DePauw. BSC is the only SCAC team still undefeated on
the season at 6-0, 2-0 in SCAC-play. Monday night’s win over
Pensacola Christian required overtime but the Panthers came out on
top, 81-71. The conference openers over the weekend were not as
tight. BSC got their first-ever win over Centre on Friday, 53-44
and only their second-ever win over DePauw on Sunday, 84-68. The
Panthers controlled both games on their home floor, fending off
last-minute surges by both the Colonels and the Tigers to take the
conference wins. BSC will return to action next weekend as they
host Rust College on Friday, December 18 in the final game before
the Christmas break.
Centre went 1-1 in its first two SCAC games of the
season falling to Birmingham Southern 53-44 Friday and then
defeating Rhodes 69-62 Sunday. The Colonels shot only 31.4% (16-51)
from the floor against the Panthers, including only 15.8% (3-19)
from the three-point line and turned the ball over 17 times. In its
win over Rhodes, Centre shot 45.1% (23-51) and out-rebounded the
Lynx 34-26. The Colonels will take the week off for finals and then
return to action next week against Asbury College in a
non-conference game before Christmas.
Nick Rose scored a game-high 26 points to lead Colorado
College to a 68-61 victory over Millsaps in the SCAC
opener for both teams on Friday night. Rose made 10 of 17 (.588)
shots from the floor and all four of his free throws. Jarrell Sweet
had 14 points and seven assists, while Ohlsen added 10 points and
nine rebounds. Rose tied his career high with 30 points as CC
remained perfect in conference play with a 71-60 victory over
Hendrix on Sunday. Rose has scored 23 or more points in five of six
games this season and leads the conference averaging 22.8 points
per game. Ohlsen scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half to
help the Tigers improve to 5-1 overall and match last
season’s total number of victories. Colorado College is idle
until Dec. 15 when the Tigers play at Division II Regis University
in Denver.
DePauw topped Rhodes by an 86-64 count on Friday
which gave Bill Fenlon his 400th career win and extended DePauw's
record to 5-0 for its best start since the 2001-02 season. However,
Birmingham-Southern ended the Tigers' string with an 84-68 victory
on Sunday. Steve Lemasters scored 23 and David Gray posted a
double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win at Rhodes.
Lemasters' 23 points were a season high and included 6-of-14
shooting from three-point range, while Gray's double-double was the
first of his career. Tony James matched a career-high with eight
assists and five steals. Birmingham-Southern shot 53.8 percent from
the field and out rebounded DePauw, 35-22, in handing the Tigers
their first loss. Sean Haseley matched a career high with 18
points, while Drew Wills established one with 14 and Lemasters
followed with 11. Fenlon's 400th win in his 25th season also marked
his 293rd in 18 seasons at DePauw.
Hendrix opened its SCAC season with a pair of road
losses this week. The Warriors suffered an 82-72 loss to Austin
College on Friday night and then dropped a 71-60 affair at Colorado
College on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2
in conference play. Hendrix struggled from the charity stripe at
23-of-39 from the line, while Austin went 15-of-17 from the free
throw line and shot 48 percent from the field to top the Warriors
on Friday night. The first half of action included two ties and six
lead changes, with Austin grabbing the largest lead (14 points)
with five minutes remaining in the half. Colorado junior guard Nick
Rose scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Tigers past Hendrix
on Sunday afternoon. The first half of action remained close with
six lead changes and five ties. Rose knocked down a three-pointer
with 10 seconds left in first half and that would be the final lead
change of the game, 34-31 at the break.
Millsaps dropped its
first two games in conference play on the road, falling at Colorado
College 68-61 and Austin College, 61-50. Despite a career-high
seven 3-pointers from senior Blake Martinez against the Tigers,
Colorado closed the first half on a 14-7 run and never looked back.
Millsaps got within four, 62-58, with less than 2 minutes
remaining, but CC sealed the game with late free throws. Against
the ‘Roos, who are off to a hot 6-1 start, Austin College
opened the game on a 16-6 run and never relinquished the lead after
that. Twice Millsaps got within single digits in the second half,
but just couldn’t overcome a season-high 11 3-pointers from
the home team and a 17-point halftime deficit. Martinez led the
offense at 17.5 ppg and shot 39 percent from the floor, while
freshman Quinn Lemieux averaged 12 ppg and 10 rpg, including his
first double-double against Austin. Millsaps will continue a
six-game road stretch after an eight-day break, traveling to Rust
College Dec. 15 and Hendrix College on Dec. 17.
Oglethorpe split two contests this past week,
losing to Piedmont and topping Sewanee. The Petrels lost a nail
biter to Piedmont as Alex Richey stroked a three-pointer from the
top of the key with only 1:30 remaining to push Oglethorpe ahead by
two, 73-71. The Lions responded immediately, however, with a
three-ball of their own, got an Oglethorpe stop on the other end
and then a basket on their ensuing possession to provide the
winning margin of 76-73. Richey led the Petrel attack on the night
with 21 points on a torrid 7 of 9 shooting from the field. Against
Sewanee, Oglethorpe's defense suffocated the Tigers into a 28%
shooting performance that held Sewanee to only 4 made field goals
in the second half en route to a runaway 76-42 win. With the win,
Oglethorpe is 3-3 (1-0) on the season and will have look to avenge
a season opening loss to Emory this Monday at 7:00 p.m. in Decatur,
Ga.
Rhodes dropped all three games this week. On
Monday night, Rhodes dropped a 65-57 decision to the University of
Dallas. Sophomore Kory Kilpatrick led the way for the Lynx with 15
points and nine rebounds. Seniors Reid Hamilton and Chris Eberle
also scored 12 points. Freshman Andrew Galow dished out a career
high nine assists. To open conference play, Rhodes lost 86-64 to
DePauw University and then on the Sunday, Rhodes fell to Centre
69-62. In the Friday night game, Rhodes was led by senior Larry
Cunningham’s 15 points. Hamilton scored 13 and Kilpatrick
scored 13 while grabbing eight rebounds for the Lynx. Against
Centre, Rhodes was led by Galow’s 16 points. Hamilton scored
14 points, Andyshea Saberioon and Brad Luckett each scored 12
points for the Lynx. Saberioon also grabbed a team high seven
rebounds.
Sewanee fell to 3-3 this week with losses to
Tennessee Temple and Oglethorpe. Tony Marelle led with 17 points on
Tuesday, while Trent Williams led with nine points on Saturday in
his first appearance this year. Marelle is leading the team with
11.3 points per game so far this year. Sewanee will play at
Covenant Tuesday before hosting the Lon Varnell Classic December
19-20.
Southwestern opened up SCAC play on Thursday night
with a trip to Trinity. Southwestern shot lights out on the
evening, going 61% from the floor and 58% from three point range to
take the 78-56 win. Sunday SU had their first home game of the
season as they faced off against the University of Dallas once
again. The stellar shooting continued at home as the Pirates shot
48% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc en route to a 75-59
win. The wins improve Southwestern to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in
the conference. SU will have a week and a half off before
continuing its home stand with the SU/TU Classic on the Dec. 19th
and 20th. Southwestern will first face Concordia on Saturday at
4:00 before playing Schreiner on Sunday.
Trinity lost its only game of the week, falling in
its SCAC and home opener against Southwestern on Thursday. Trinity
lost 78-56 in that game, marking just the second time in the past
four seasons that a game against Southwestern has been decided by
more than 10 points. The Tigers will be off until December 19 and
20 when the team travels to Georgetown, Texas for the
Southwestern/Trinity Pre-Holiday Classic. Trinity faces Schreiner,
which it beat 61-52 earlier this season, and Concordia in the
tournament, before returning home for the Trinity/Southwestern
Holiday Classic on December 28-29.
