SUWANEE, Ga. - In the first weekend of cross division play, both DePauw University and Southwestern University swept SCAC games last week. The Tigers earned road victories at Hendrix (89-81) and Millsaps (67-65) while the Pirates picked up home wins against Sewanee (64-56) and Oglethorpe (60-57).
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College picked
up a pair of big wins over the weekend, knocking down 12 three
pointers as a team in an 85-66 win over Rhodes and then holding off
Birmingham-Southern in a 75-68 thriller. The ‘Roos are now
11-4 overall on the year and 5-2 in conference play. Scott Straley
scored 16 points to lead Austin College against Rhodes and Chris
Sturtevant, Kola Alade and Arron Mewbourn each scored 11.
Sturtevant added six assists and five rebounds, and Alade and
Mewbourn each handed out four assists. Against BSC, Kyle Lintelman
came up huge down the stretch, scoring nine points in the final
four minutes to finish with 19 points in the game. Lintelman was
6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-5 from three point range and added
five assists.
Birmingham-Southern split two games this week to
move to 13-2 overall and 5-2 in SCAC-play. The Panthers beat
Colorado College 70-65 on Friday before losing to Austin College
75-68 on Sunday. The win over CC was hard-fought for the Panthers
with five separate lead changes in the first half alone. BSC took
the lead when senior point guard Aaron Parr scored two of his
team-leading 14 points with a jumper to give 'Southern a 44-33
lead. That sparked a 15-1 run over the next seven minutes to put
BSC up for good. The Tigers never got closer than five points
again, including at the buzzer to secure the final margin of 70-65.
Sunday’s game went back-and-forth as well, with ten lead
changes in the game. The ‘Roos were able to outlast the final
Panther attack, however, and outscored BSC 16-8 in the closing
minutes to pull away and hand the Panthers their second loss of the
season. The Panthers will return to action this Friday at home as
they host Hendrix College. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
Centre split a pair of SCAC road contests falling
53-52 to Millsaps Friday and then rebounding for a 66-46 win over
Hendrix Sunday. The Colonels shooting woes continued against
Millsaps as Centre shot only 27.8% (5-18) in the first half to
trail 30-15 at the intermission. Although holding the Majors to
only 26.1% (6-23) in the second half, it wasn't enough as Centre's
rally came up one point short. The Colonels shot considerably
better Sunday hitting 51.0% (26-51) from the floor and
out-rebounding the Warriors 40-27 for the 20-point victory. Centre,
now 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC, will host Trinity and
Southwestern on back-to-back nights this weekend.
Brady Ohlsen recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds to help
Colorado College re-gain a share of first place in
the Western Division with a 73-63 victory over Rhodes. Nick Rose
scored 20 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, making six
of nine field-goal attempts and seven of nine free throws. Jarrell
Sweet added 12 points and five assists, and tied his season high
with seven steals. Sweet led all scorers with 17 points, but CC
couldn’t overcome foul problems and dropped a 70-65 decision
to Birmingham-Southern College in a battle of division leaders. The
Tigers led for most of the opening 20 minutes and went ahead 36-28
when Jeremiah Waters drained one of his career-high five three
pointers 23 seconds into the second half, but lost the momentum
just over two minutes later when Rose was called for his fourth
foul. Colorado College travels to Sewanee and Oglethorpe this
weekend.
DePauw improved to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in
conference play and extended its win streak to four with wins at
Hendrix (89-81) and Millsaps (67-65). In the win at Hendrix, Drew
Wills was perfect from the field and the line and scored a
career-best 16 points while Tony James and Sean Haseley each added
14. Steve Lemasters followed with 12 points with David Gray
grabbing nine rebounds and James adding four assists. The win was
the 300th for Bill Fenlon as DePauw's head coach. James led the
Tigers with 12 points and nine assists while committing just one
turnover. For the weekend, James led four DePauw double-figure
scorers with 13.0 points and 6.5 assists per game and posted a
2.6:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Callen averaged 7.0 rebounds.
Hendrix suffered a pair of losses over the weekend
and stretched its losing streak to six games. The Warriors suffered
an 89-81 loss to DePauw on Friday night before falling to Centre,
66-46, on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix now stands at 4-9 overall and
1-6 in SCAC action and will travel to Birmingham-Southern and
Rhodes this weekend. DePauw held one reasonable advantage over
Hendrix in the box score, as the Tigers had twice as many chances
from the charity stripe (21-of-26). Hendrix junior guard Ryan Rizos
led all players with 22 points and senior guard Cal Rose knocked
down five 3-pointers to finish with 21 points. Rose highlighted the
Warriors’ loss to Centre when he drained a pair of 3-pointers
in the first half to set a new school record with 217 career
3-pointers. Rose now ranks 9th on the SCAC’s all-time 3-point
list.
Millsaps concluded a
seven-game homestand winning two of three games this past week. The
Majors, now 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the SCAC, stretched their
season-long win streak to five with wins over the University of
Dallas and Centre College before falling to DePauw University.
Senior Blake Martinez scored all of his game-high 18 points in the
second half and Millsaps took advantage of a 49-26 rebound
advantage to defeat the University of Dallas Monday night, 65-51.
Martinez proceeded to make the decisive free throw with 2.1 seconds
remaining in regulation as Millsaps hung on to take down visiting
Centre Friday night for its fifth straight win, 53-52. Sunday
afternoon, the Majors let a five-point halftime lead slip away to
conference-leading DePauw who came away with the 67-65 victory.
Senior Cameron Varnado’s last second shot attempt off a
Martinez intentionally missed free throw would have tied the score
had it fallen, but bounced off the front iron as time expired.
Millsaps will hit the road for a pair of conference games as they
face Rhodes College and Birmingham-Southern College, January 22 and
24.
Oglethorpe lost a pair of road SCAC contests this
past week to Centre and DePauw. Against the Colonels on Friday the
Petrels let a 14 point second half lead slip away against the
Colonels and their six game winning streak along with it by losing
in overtime, 59-58. Oglethorpe looked poised to claim a huge road
conference win after jumping on the Colonels early on for a 30-26
halftime lead that swelled to 47-33 following an Erik Strong basket
with 12:07 remaining in the contest. The Petrels went cold,
however, and the Colonels put together a 22-8 run as the clocked
tick down to send the game to overtime. In overtime, the Colonels
took their first lead of the entire game with 4:02 left on a basket
by Danny Noll. Against DePauw, The Petrels only trailed by one
point at halftime but the Tigers opened the second half on a 30-9
run to seal the win, 80-60. Todd Ward led the Petrels on the
afternoon with 16 points and nine rebounds. The Petrels are now 8-5
on the season and 3-2 in SCAC play. Oglethorpe is back in action
this Friday night when they square off with the Trinity Tigers in
San Antonio, Texas.
Rhodes dropped a pair of SCAC games to Austin
College (85-66) and Colorado College (73-63) last week. Against
Austin College Rhodes was led by Andrew Galow’s 17 points. He
connected on 11-12 free throws and was 3-5 from the floor. He also
added four rebounds. The Lynx also received solid production from
Andyshea Saberioon as he chipped in with 15 points and three
rebounds. Kory Kilpatrick rounded out the double-digit scorers as
he netted 11 points. Against Colorado College, the Lynx placed
three players in double digits as Reid Hamilton (20), Kilpatrick
(17), and Nathan Ollie (15) did most of the scoring. The game was
tied at halftime but a 13-3 CC run midway through the second half
was all the Tigers needed as they raced to a 10 point win. Rhodes
will be back in action this weekend as they host SCAC rivals
Millsaps College and Hendrix College.
Sewanee dropped a pair of SCAC games in Texas this
weekend with a loss to Southwestern on Friday and Trinity on
Sunday. Andrew Little led the Tigers on Friday with 20 points and
Garrett Hollingsworth was the high man on Sunday with 11 points.
Hollingsworth is leading Sewanee so far with 10.1 points per game
and six rebounds per game. Sewanee is now 3-12 and 0-7 in the SCAC.
The Tigers will host Austin College and Colorado Colleges this
weekend.
Southwestern won two close games this week to
remain at the top of the west with a 12-4 overall record and 5-2 in
the SCAC. After a scrappy start on Friday that saw Southwestern
with 11 first half turnovers, the Pirates regrouped and pulled off
the 64-56 victory over Sewanee. Saturday's contest was just what
was expected with the two 4-2 teams facing off. Southwestern led by
10 points late in the second half but Oglethorpe took a brief lead
with one minute to play. Senior A.C. Cox's three pointer gave
Southwestern a two point lead that proved to be enough as SU won
60-57. The Pirates head out on a tough road trip in the coming
week, playing DePauw on Friday night and Centre on Saturday.
Trinity split a home weekend SCAC series against
East Division opponents Oglethorpe and Sewanee. Trinity’s
comeback bid fell short in a narrow 66-62 loss on Friday, but the
team rallied for a 65-46 win over Sewanee on Sunday afternoon. Luke
Caldarera averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5
steals per game to lead the Tigers over the weekend. Ryan Beall
came off the bench and averaged 11.0 points/game for Trinity. Beall
also hit 8-10 from the field (2-2 from three-point range) and 4-5
from the foul line. Trinity heads back on the road for a tough test
this weekend, continuing its SCAC schedule at Centre and DePauw
– two of the three teams currently tied atop the East
Division standings. Last season, Trinity lost a 61-54 game at
DePauw, but defeated Centre 58-56 despite trailing by 15 with under
five minutes to play.
