SUWANEE, Ga. - The 2011 SCAC Field Hockey Tournament is set to begin on the campus of Rhodes College this Saturday as the host Lynx have earned the top seed and will face the fourth seeded Purple Tigers of Sewanee at 11 am CST. The winner of that match will face the winner of the second seeded Hendrix Warriors and third seeded Centre Colonels for the SCAC Championship on Sunday.

Playing without the team's point leader Barbara Parks, the
Centre field hockey team closed out the regular
season with a pair of SCAC road losses over the weekend, falling
3-2 at Rhodes and 4-0 at Hendrix. Facing Rhodes in a meeting of
first place teams Friday, the Colonels fell in a 2-0 hole before
Courtney Kuiper scored on an assist from Erin Bacon and Sydney
White added an unassisted goal to tie the score with 20 minutes to
play. However, Rhodes scored a third goal in the final minute to
give Centre the loss. Senior goalkeeper Patty Cowley made eight
saves in the loss. On Sunday, Hendrix avenged a 4-1 loss from
earlier in the season by defeating the Colonels 4-0, handing Centre
its first shutout since a loss to No. 15 Christopher Newport in the
second game of the year. Cowley made four saves, and Jennifer
Bohnert had a defensive save.
Hendrix finished the regular season with the
program’s best ever record (10-4) and tied for second place
in the SCAC, the highest finish in school history. In a 3-0 win on
Friday against Sewanee, sophomore defender Jennifer Koller put the
Warriors up just before halftime in the 35th minute with a goal
shot from the left side, after a pass by sophomore Elizabeth
Lancaster. Junior Kelly Rappe' scored her ninth goal of the year in
the 64th minute when she knocked the ball in after a rebound.
Freshman Lotte Kraaijenbrink assisted freshman Erika Jasso's
team-leading 14th goal in the 67th minute for the final score of
the game. The goal by Rappe' gave the Fort Collins, Colo. native 49
career points, breaking Abby Coleman's previous school record of
48. Rappe' also holds the Hendrix record with 22 career goals.
Jasso and senior midfielder Lauren Thorburg scored two goals each
in a 4-0 win over Centre on Sunday. The win was the first for the
Warrior program in 10 tries against the Colonels. Thorburg, who was
honored with fellow senior Liz Williamson before the game, put
Hendrix on the board just 5:04 into the game after knocking in a
rebound. Jasso scored in the 19th minute to make the game 2-0.
Thorburg scored again, her third of the season, on a pass from
junior forward Kelly Rappe’ in the 45th minute. Just 1:59
later, Jasso tacked on the final goal, her conference-leading 16th
of the season. The second-seeded Warriors will take #3 Centre again
on Saturday at the SCAC Tournament in Memphis.
Rhodes continued their winning streak at home with two big
conference wins over Centre and Sewanee. The Lynx jumped out
to an early 2-0 lead of Centre but the Colonels pushed backed and
scored twice mid-way through the second half to tie the game.
Rhodes’ Katie Faucher secured the Lynx 3-2 win with a goal
out of a scramble around the goal mouth with just over a minute
remaining. The Lynx dominated Sewanee on Sunday outshooting
the Tigers 23-4 in route to the 4-0 shutout win. Kat Simpson
and Katie Faucher scored two goals apiece while Faucher, Sarah
Kennedy, and Regan McLaughlin tallied assists. With the wins
the Lynx secured the SCAC Regular Season Champions Title and #1
seed in the SCAC Tournament for the third consecutive year.
Rhodes advances to 9-6 (5-1 SCAC) on the season and the team is
eager to host the conference tournament next weekend.
Sewanee fell at Hendrix (3-0) and Rhodes (4-0) over the
weekend. Sewanee enters the SCAC Tournament this week as the No. 4
seed. With that, Sewanee will play Rhodes – the No. 1 seed
– at 11 a.m. Saturday in Memphis. In the previous two
meetings Rhodes outscored Sewanee 8-1.
