SUWANEE, Ga. – Rhodes College, on the
heels of its third consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference field hockey tournament championship, was rewarded with
recognition in all four major postseason awards categories. In
exclusive voting by the league’s head field hockey coaches,
Katie Faucher was tabbed as SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year,
Regan McLaughlin was selected Defensive Co-Player-of-the-Year, Kat
Simpson was named Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year and Lynx head coach Jane
Wells was honored as Co-Coach-of-the-Year.
Also earning major award recognition was Jennifer Bohnert of Centre
College, who shares Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors with
McLaughlin and Erika Jasso of Hendrix College, who split the vote
with Simpson to share Newcomer-of-the-Year honors. Hendrix head
coach Ellie Karvoski also received two votes from her peers to
share Coach-of-the-Year honors with Wells.
Faucher (pictured left), a junior
forward from Jefferson, Mass., scored 15 goals during the season
(second in the SCAC), including a goal in each of Rhodes’
SCAC postseason matches. She added four assists during the season
for 34 points – currently good for third in the conference.
The key to the Lynx’ offensive production and the leader of
the league’s most explosive offense, Faucher scored the
game-winner in three of Rhodes’ five conference wins this
season.
McLaughlin (pictured right), a sophomore
defender from Fairfax, Va., and a phenomenal athlete, constantly
displayed her ability to play all 70 minutes while running end-line
to end-line – a major reason that Rhodes’ goalkeepers
did not face a single one-on-one situation during the entire
regular season. McLaughlin, who has four defensive saves this
season, also shipped in offensively, scoring three goals while
assisting on two others for eight points.
Bohnert of Centre (pictured left), a
senior sweeper from Louisville, Ky., and a First Team All-Region
and All-SCAC selection in 2010, was a key part of a Colonels
defense that allowed an average of 2.05 goals per game on the way
to an 11-8 overall record in the regular season and a 3-3 mark in
the SCAC. Just this past week, Bohnert was selected by the National
Field Hockey Coaches Association to participate in its 2011
Division III Senior Game, the only SCAC senior to be so
honored.
Rhodes’ Simpson (pictured right),
a first-year forward from St. Louis, Mo., made an immediate impact
for the Lynx, finishing third in the conference in goals scored
(13) while leading the league in assists (10). An explosive player
and one of the fastest in all of Division III with the ball on her
stick, Simpson’s 36 points ties for league-high honors with
the player she is sharing the Newcomer award with, Erika Jasso of
Hendrix.
Hendrix’s Jasso (pictured left), a
first-year forward from Oceanside, Calif., led the SCAC and broke
the school record with 36 points and 16 goals scored. Jasso used
her speed, agility, and quick shot to score multiple goals per game
and was the offensive catalyst for a squad that set single-season
school records for points (117), goals (43), shots (244), shots on
goal (173) and wins (10). In addition, her aggressive defensive led
to several crucial turnovers for opponents.
Jane Wells (pictured right) led Rhodes
to an 11-6 overall mark and a 7-1 conference record and the
team’s third consecutive SCAC championship with
Sunday’s 4-0 shutout of Centre College in the title game. In
seven years at the helm of the Lynx, Wells sports an overall mark
of 81-44 (41-11 in SCAC play) and is the winningest coach in the
history of the conference. On Monday, the Lynx received an at-large
berth into the 2011 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament, the
team’s second consecutive appearance in the event.
Ellie Karvosk (pictured left) led her
Hendrix squad to a 10-5 overall mark (3-3 in the SCAC), the best in
program history, as the Warriors set school records for points
(117), goals (43), shots (244), shots on goal (173) and wins (10).
Despite falling to Centre in the SCAC semifinals, Hendrix did pick
up its first-ever win against the Colonels during the regular
season and its three conference wins equaled the program’s
total since field hockey achieved varsity status on campus in
2007.
