Luke Packard, Trinity University, Defensive Player of the Week (Week 11)

LUKE PACKARD OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior defensive lineman from Dallas, Texas, has been named the SCAC Football Defensive Player of the Week for games played Saturday, Novermber 12.

Packard led Trinity an outstanding defensive effort in Saturday's 14-0 win over Austin College, finishing off the 2016 season with the team's first shutout since the final game of the 2014 season.

Packard finished the game with nine tackles, as well as 2.5 sacks for a loss of 11 yards. Those 2.5 sacks pushed him over the top for a new Trinity career record. Packard broke the 13-year-old record set by Jarrod Smith (2000-03), and finished his career with 27.0 total sacks - just 1.5 sacks ahead of Smith's previous mark.

For the season, Packard led Trinity with 87 total tackles, 27.0 tackles for a loss of 126 yards, and 16.5 sacks for 89 yards lost. The 16.5 sacks in a single season also sets a new standard among Tiger players, with the previous single season record being 12.5 in 1993. Packard also racked up a team-best 46 solo tackles and 14 quarterback hurries on the year.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Zach Cole of Southwestern University led the Pirates' defense with a game-high 13 tackles, including two for loss, in a 35-31 victory of Texas Lutheran. Darian Candler of Texas Lutheran University moved into second place on the TLU DIII-era all-time tackle list with 12 more tackles Saturday against Southwestern. He also recorded 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup in the game.
