Southwestern tops Trinity, captures SCAC championship

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Just four years after resurrecting the program, Southwestern clinched its first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 20-7 victory over Trinity Saturday at Birkelbach Field. It also marked the program's first conference title since being crowned Texas Conference co-champions in 1946. Complete Story 

The Pirates improved to 6-3 overall (5-0 SCAC) with only one conference game remaining.

Southwestern jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first half.

Matt Gillen caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Hicks in the opening quarter, while Luke Fierst connected on a pair of field goals in the second.

Tyler Frisby then intercepted a pass an returned it 47 yards to the end zone in the third quarter, giving the Bucs a 20-0 advantage.

The Tigers (4-5, 2-3 SCAC) scored their lone points on Davis King's four-yard touchdown pass to Jon Sorery with 3:24 left in the contest.

Hicks threw for 208 yards and a touchdowns, while Gillen caught eight passes for 75 yards and the one score. Colten Shea hauled in five catches for 100 yards.

Aaron Robinson led the defensive charge with a game-high 13 stops. Frisby posted nine tackles and two interceptions.

The Pirates will travel to Seguin next Saturday to face Texas Lutheran in the season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
