ATLANTA, Ga. - It was announced today that current Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference members Austin College and Trinity University will affiliate with the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) in the sport of football beginning with the 2017 season.
After losing its automatic bid in the sport of football following the reorganization of the league in 2012, the SCAC has functioned as a four-team football conference, as only half of the current membership sponsors the sport.
Currently, Austin College, Southwestern University, Texas Lutheran University and Trinity University participate in the sport of football in the SCAC.
"Scheduling had become increasingly difficult for our football-playing members," said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. "As it became less likely that an internal option or even expansion would solve this problem, the league's Executive Council agreed that other options should be explored. I am pleased that Austin College and Trinity have found a new football home and I anticipate a similar result as Southwestern and Texas Lutheran continue to weigh their options."
The 2016 season will be the final season of SCAC football, which began play in 1962 as the College Athletic Conference.
