TLU's Barrolle, Dowling, and Bradenburg Sweep SCAC Football Player of the Week Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Texas Lutheran running back Marquis Barrolle, defensive back Drake Dowling, and kick Tyler Brandenburg swept the first Player of the Week Awards of 2014.











SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Games played Saturday, September 6th

MARQUIS BARROLLE OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a 5-4, 150-pound sophomore running back from Ingleside, Texas, has been named the SCAC Football Offensive Players-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 6th. 

Barrolle led the Bulldogs to a 61-15 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday top open TLU's brand new Bulldog Stadium in style. 

Barrolle cristined the new stadium with a touchdown in the first three minutes of the game. He went on to rush for 91 yards on 17 carries.

Barrolle went on to score the first touchdown of the second half, hauling in a 23-yard score from Trenton White to ignite a 44 point half. He caught four balls on the evening for 48 yards.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior running back Madison Ross of Austin College had a strong all around game in the season opener against Rhodes, rushing for a team-best 62 yards with an average of 5.2 yards per carry and adding 19 receiving yards on a pair of catches. Junior running back Travis Williams of Trinity posted career highs in rushing attempts and yards, going for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in the first game of the season. Southwestern's game was terminated in the third quarter due to lightning in the area.
 

SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games played Saturday, Septemeber 6th

DRAKE DOWLING OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a 5-8, 183-pound junior defensive back from Katy, Texas has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 6th. 


Dowling recorded 12 tackles on the evening including six solo and six assists in a 61-15 win over Sul Ross State. It was TLU's first game in brand new Bulldogs Stadium.

In the third quarter, Dowling  picked off a pass and returned it 23 yards deep into Sul Ross territory, setting up a touchdown in what turned into a rout. 

Dowling led a defense that shutout Sul Roos in the second half, 44-0, he also added 1.5 tackles for loss.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior defensive lineman Tre Stewart of Austin College was a menace in the Rhodes offensive backfield on Saturday, making nine total tackles including 3.0 for a loss of 18 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 16 yardsSenior defensive back Jai Boatman of Trinity recorded seven solo and seven assisted tackles, and also had a key fourth-quarter interception to lead the Tiger defense on Saturday in his first game since 2012. Southwestern's game was terminated in the third quarter due to lightning in the area.

SCAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

TYLER BRANDENBURG OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a 6-2, 210-pound senior kicker and punter from Spring, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 6th. 

Brandenburg, last season's SCAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Year picked up where he left off last season, going a perfect 2-for-2 on field goal attempts from 35 and 31 yards out to extend his field goals made streak to 10. He was 7-for-8 on PATs with his only miss coming on a blocked kick.

Brandenburg's 35-yarder as time expired in the first half gave TLU a 17-15 lead at the half. 

Brandenburg also had the hustle play of the game, catching Sul Ross returner Uriah Mosley at the 1-yard line. It appeared Mosley would score on a 100-yard kickoff return, but Brandenburg ran down and caught Mosley at the 1.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior defensive back Shane Hodge of Austin College  played a big role in the field position battle against Rhodes, averaging 8.8 yards per punt return with a long of 15 yards and also adding three tackles from his defensive back position. Senior wide receiver Matthew Kennemer of Trinity racked up 127 yards on five kickoff returns in the game, highlighted by a pair of crucial returns in the fourth quarter. His 39-yard return set Trinity up for a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, then his next return went for 40 yards to put the Tiger offense in Howard Payne territory on its final drive. Southwestern's game was terminated in the third quarter due to lightning in the area.
