TLU's White, Trinity's Simmons, Matthews, King Named SCAC Football Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Junior quarterback Trenton White of Texas Lutheran University and junior running back Jeremy Simmons, junior defensive lineman Martel Matthews, and senior running back Desmond King of Trinity University have been named players of the peek for week 10 of the SCAC football season. 

 

SCAC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games played Saturday, November 8th

TRENTON WHITE OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a 5-9, 160-pound junior quarterback from Sachse, Texas, and JEREMY SIMMONS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 5-10, 206-pund junior running back from University Heights, Ohio, has been named the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, November 8th.  

White led the Texas Lutheran offense to 27 points in the second half to claim a share of the conference title in a 36-24 victory on the road over Austin College.

White accounted for five total touchdowns, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for two more. White completed 20-of -35 passes against the 'Roos and threw for 237 yards with one interception.

White rushed for a career-high 94 yards on 12 carries and scored on runs of 12 and 27 yards. His 27-yarder late in the fourth quarter sealed the victory for the Bulldogs.

For the season, White leads the conference in passing yards/game with 241.1 yards. He also leads the league in touchdown passes with 20 as well as completion percentage at 63.6%. His five rushing touchdowns is sixth in the league.

Simmons led Trinity to its first SCAC victory of the season with a career performance at Southwestern University on Saturday evening.

Simmons rushed 24 times for a career-best 216 yards and a touchdown against the Pirates, accounting for nearly 57% of the team’s total offensive yards. His rushing total marks the ninth-best in school history for a single game. Late in the first quarter, Simmons broke a 64-yard run that set the Tigers up in the red zone, and led to the team’s first touchdown.

He also led the team with 56 rushing yards in a 60-yard scoring drive that began with his 47-yard carry, and ended with his two-yard plunge across the end zone to put Trinity up 14-0.

For the season, Simmons is third on the team with 402 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He is averaging 5.8 yards/carry, toting the ball 69 times in 2014. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior running back Madison Ross of Austin College eclipsed the 100 yard mark for the third time in the last three games, rushing for 139 yards and two touchdowns against Texas Lutheran. Ross increased his league best yards-per-carry average to 6.5 with his strong performance. Southwestern did not nominate anyone.

 

SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games played Saturday, November 8th

MARTEL MATTHEWS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 5-9, 197-pound junior defensive lineman from Missouri City, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, November 8th.

Matthews led Trinity's defense in the team's first SCAC victory of the season on Saturday, as the Tigers defeated Southwestern 38-18.

Matthews recorded seven total tackles and a team-best 2.5 sacks in the victory, as Trinity held the Pirates to just 54 yards rushing in the game. Matthews also forced a fumble and had three quarterback hurries in addition to his sacks that accounted for eight yards lost.

For the season, Matthews is now leading Trinity with 5.0 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior defensive back Scott Loy of Austin College was all over the field against Texas Lutheran, making 12 tackles including six solo stops, and adding two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal. Sophomore defensive back Taylor Fann of Southwestern had a career day, picking up three interceptions in Southwestern's homecoming loss to Trinity while also adding four tackles on the evening. Senior defensive end Ethan Powell of Texas Lutheran was a disruptive force to the Austin College offense all day in Saturday's Bulldog road win. Powell registered two sacks (for 14 yards in losses), four tackles for loss (for 17 yards in losses) and a total of seven tackles (five solo) against the Kangaroos. 

 

SCAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games played Saturday, November 8th

DESMOND KING OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY,
 a 5-7, 174-pound senior running back from Pearland, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, November 8th.

King led the Trinity Tiger football team to its first SCAC victory of the season on Saturday, finishing off a season sweep of Southwestern University with a 38-18 win.

After Southwestern scored to cut the Trinity lead to 14-6, King took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score that squashed the momentum, and kept the Tigers completely in control of the game. 

For the season, King has returned six kicks for 228 yards and Saturday's score. He also has 149 yards and two more touchdowns rushing for the Tigers.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore kicker Javi Reynoso of Austin College was perfect on his kicks on Saturday, making a field goal attempt and hitting all three of his PAT's despite a very strong wind throughout the day.  Senior kicker Tyler Brandenburg of Texas Lutheran shifted the momentum of Saturday's road game at Austin College by making a career-long 51-yard field goal at the end of the first half. Brandenburg nailed the field goal as time expired for the half. Southwestern did not nominate anyone.
