SUWANEE, Ga. - Week three of the 2010 season saw the first conference weekend for the SCAC with three games. Rhodes jumped out to a 22-3 lead at Trinity and held on for a 22-16 win. The win marked the first time the Lynx won in San Antonio since Oct. 31, 1992.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling 38-24 after a late surge by Millsaps to fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in SCAC play. The ’Roos led 24-17 in the third quarter before the Majors ripped off 21 straight points to close out the game. Austin College struck first on a Mitch Anderson field goal and after 10 quick points by Millsaps got a six yard touchdown run from Brogan Funderburg and a 39 yard scoring pass from Blake Towery to Jordan Schell to grab a 16-10 lead, and after the Majors scored to take a 17-16 lead into halftime the ‘Roos used an 18 yard touchdown strike from Travis Zambiasi to Greg Harrell to take a 24-17 lead three minutes out of the break. However, that’s when the Majors would take control and take advantage of two late AC turnovers to hand the ’Roos the 14 point loss. Harrell caught eight passes for 137 yards and Zambiasi connected on 8-of-17 passes for 185 yards to lead the ‘Roos offensively while Ethan Tanner had a team-best seven tackles and Kenneth Eneh added five stops, including two for loss.

Birmingham-Southern was last week but returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, traveling to Montgomery again to face Huntingdon in the second annual Wesley Cup game. The Panthers dropped a 59-28 decision to Huntingdon in last year’s inaugural Wesley Cup game.

Trailing by five points with two minutes left to play, Centre drove to the DePauw 38-yard line, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete and the Colonels fell 21-16 to the Tigers in the SCAC opener for both teams Saturday, Sept. 18 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky. DePauw out-gained Centre 346-316 in total yards. The Colonels had the edge in rushing yards 211-94, but the Tigers had the advantage in the passing game throwing for 252 yards to 105 for Centre. The Colonels, now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference, will take to the road next week traveling to Sherman, Texas to play Austin.

Visiting DePauw put together long scoring drives to end the first half and start the second on the way to a 21-16 win at Centre. The Colonels took an early 7-0 lead as it drove 80 yards in 14 plays on its opening drive of the contest. Alex Koors caught a 4-yard pass from Michael Engle to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:04 left in the half before Centre booted a 30-yard field goal with 4:19 remaining in the half to take a 10-7 advantage. On their final drive of the first half, the Tigers started on their own 14 and covered 86 yards in 13 plays with Jon Ellis scoring on a 1-yard run to put DePauw ahead, 14-10, with 27 seconds left. Derrick Karazsia's 3-yard run with 5:39 left in the third wrapped up an 11-play, 74-yard drive and gave DePauw a 21-10 lead. Centre closed the gap to 21-16 as Osterman scored on an 8-yard run with 3:55 remaining in the fourth. Engle completed 29 of 36 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown with 10 passes going to Alex Koors for 85 yards and nine to Brayden Dahlstrom for 78 yards. Ellis rushed for 50 yards in 13 carries and Karazsia had 11 for 40. Jonathan Lambert paced the DePauw defense with 11 tackles while Kyle Sherer had 10. Joshua Sturek had the Tigers' lone sack late in the game which helped seal the win. Thomas Kent and Jared Ferguson had nine tackles each for Centre. Koors ranks second in DePauw history with 2,740 career receiving yards and 28 touchdown receptions and fourth with 178 receptions. He needs 174 yards to break the DePauw career mark of 2,913 held by Dan Ryan (1999-2002).

Millsaps got their first win of the season this week against Austin College 38-24 to move to 2-1 on the season, 1-0 in SCAC-play. The Majors capitalized on several key turnovers from the ‘Roos that led to Millsaps touchdowns. Shane Bowser had a colossal day, rushing for 150 net yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns. Michael Galatas connected with Garrett Pinciotti for six receptions, including a 54-yarder for six. The Majors special teams had a solid performance with Galatas racking up 96 yards on kickoff returns alone to pace the team with 204 all-purpose yards on the day. Millsaps will return to the road this weekend to take on the Trinity Tigers in a 1:00 p.m. game from San Antonio.

Rhodes won their 2010 SCAC season opener, defeating Trinity 22-16 in San Antonio on Saturday, September 18th. The win was the first by a Rhodes football team in San Antonio, since the Lynx defeated the Tigers 31-19 on Halloween night of 1992. Senior running back Matt Gilbert led all rushers with a game high 134 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Perkins completed 11 of 19 passes for 60 yards and one touchdown, and rushed 8 times for 48 yards. The defense came up big all night, recording a season high five quarterback sacks against the Tigers. After Trinity recovered an onside kick with 1:15 to play at their own 41 yard-line, Rhodes sacked the Tigers twice to put the game away. Senior defensive back Pete Bilan had a game high 12 tackles, and defensive back Clay Adams picked off two passes for 53 yards to stop Trinity drives. Rhodes improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in SCAC play. The Lynx return to action on October 2 in a non-conference game against LaGrange College.

The second quarter proved to be a killer for Sewanee on Saturday. After holding Hampden-Sydney to just three points in the first stanza, Sewanee gave up four touchdowns in the second period as HSC went up 31-0 and never looked back. Hampden-Sydney would add one more touchdown in the third quarter to make it 38-0, a score that would stand until the end. Things started slowly for the Sewanee and the Tigers were never able to gain enough momentum to find the end zone. Hampden-Sydney’s Travis Lane racked up 260 passing yards and threw for 3 touchdowns on a day when the Sewanee defense gave up 440 yards of total offense. Sewanee was only able to muster 42 passing yards, on three of nine passing, and 80 rushing yards in the contest. Sewanee, now 1-2 on the season, will stay on the road next week as they travel to Greencastle, Ind. to take on DePauw in their SCAC opener.

Trinity lost at home to Rhodes for the first time since 1992 this past weekend, also marking only the second regular season Division III home loss since the end of the 1995 campaign. The Tigers scored first in the game on a field goal by All-American Garrett Biel, but Rhodes scored 22 unanswered points to take a 22-3 lead midway through the final quarter. Trinity rallied with two scoring drives late in the game, and then recovered an onside kick with just 68 seconds remaining. The comeback fell short, though, and Rhodes opened SCAC play with a key road victory. The Tigers lose the opening conference game of their schedule for the first time since 1992. Trinity meets defending co-champion Millsaps this Saturday, finishing off a three-game home stand to start the season. The Tigers have lost three of the past four meetings with the Majors, including a 56-27 loss the last time the teams met in San Antonio (2008). The series dates back to 1974, and Saturday will be the 34th meeting between the two teams. Millsaps leads the series with a record of 18-15.
