SUWANEE, Ga. - With its 30-20 win over visiting
Austin College, DePauw wrapped up its first-ever outright Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The win moved the
Tigers to 9-0 for the first time in school history and sets up a
showdown with rival Wabash next week in the Monon Bell Game.

Austin College hung tough with
undefeated DePauw but could not overcome the Tigers on the road,
falling 30-20 in Greencastle on Saturday. The ‘Roos are now
4-4 overall this season. Austin College led 7-3 early on following
a 26-yard touchdown run from Travis Zambiasi, but DePauw outscored
Austin College 13-3 in the second quarter to take a 16-10 lead into
halftime. The ‘Roos cut it to a 16-13 game in the third but
DePauw scored two more touchdowns to push it to a 30-13 game before
Brogan Funderburg scored from four yards out to make it a 10 point
final margin. Funderburg carried 12 times for 64 yards and Zambiasi
completed 8-of-15 passes for 79 yards and added 44 yards rushing,
while Braydon MaQuar had five catches for 43 yards. Kenneth Eneh
and Evan Coachman led the defense with 10 tackles apiece. Austin
College wraps up the season on Saturday with a trip to San Antonio
to take on Trinity.
Birmingham-Southern picked up a big road win
this week at Rhodes, defeating the Lynx 41-19. The Panther defense
picked off seven passes, scoring on five interceptions, to help BSC
move to 6-3 for the first winning season since the program was
reinstated in 2007. Junior defensive back Andrew Shannon recorded
three of the Panthers’ seven interceptions, running one back
38 yards for a touchdown. Junior defensive back Micah Baker also
had two picks, while senior lineman Justin Ray and junior
linebacker Dustin Massey recorded the other two interceptions.
Shannon also led with nine tackles. On the offensive end, senior
tailback Walter Arrington led with 130 yards rushing, and has now
hit the 100-yard mark in seven of BSC’s nine games this
season. Sophomore quarterback Jimmy Stainback was 6-of-13 for 64
yards and one touchdown passing and one on the ground, and freshman
receiver Evin Smith caught four passes, including one touchdown
pass. The Panthers wrap up the 2010 season this Saturday at home,
taking on Millsaps at 1 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
After losing two-straight SCAC games, Centre
jumped back in the win column with a 26-7 win over visiting
Trinity. The win was the second straight home win over the Tigers
and the eighth win in the series, cutting Trinity’s lead to
14-8 overall. With the win, the Colonels improved to 5-4 overall
and finished with a .500 record (3-3) in the SCAC. The win also
ensures Centre of its sixth straight non-losing season and fourth
straight season with a .500 SCAC record or higher. The Colonels
will complete the 2010 season Saturday when LaGrange visits
Danville.
Derrick Karazsia rushed for a career-high 133 yards and a
touchdown and Michael Engle tossed three touchdown passes as
No. 21 DePauw improved to 9-0 for
the first time in school history with a 30-20 win over Austin
College. The Tigers, ranked 21st in the latest coaches' poll and
22nd by D3football.com, finished with a 6-0 SCAC record for the
fourth SCAC title in 13 seasons of competition and the first
outright title. DePauw's nine wins has matched the school record
set in both 1981 and 1996. Eric Malm put DePauw on the board
with a 29-yard field goal with 4:53 left in the first which came
less than six minutes after his 35-yard try hit the right upright.
The Kangaroos booted a 20-yard field goal with 8:37 left in the
third to close DePauw's lead to 16-13, but Alex Koors hauled in a
9-yard pass from Engle with 2:53 remaining in the third to push the
Tigers' lead to 23-13. That catch was Koors' 41st career touchdown
reception which tied the DePauw and SCAC mark held by Dan Ryan
(1999-2002). DePauw took advantage with a 9-play, 78-yard drive
capped by Engle's 9-yard pass to Brayden Dahlstrom with 10:13 left.
Engle completed 26-of-40 passes for 303 yards with three scores and
one interception. Koors hauled in eight for 117 yards for the 16th
100-yard receiving game of his career .Defensively, Ryan Preuss led
DePauw with seven tackles. The Tigers close out the regular season
next Saturday in the annual Monon Bell Game at Wabash. The teams
meet for the 117th time with Wabash holding a 54-53-9 lead. In
games played for the Monon Bell, which entered the series in 1932,
DePauw leads 37-35-6. The game will be televised live by HDNet with
kickoff scheduled for 1:07 p.m.
Millsaps had the weekend off as the Majors prepare to
close out the 2010 season on the road with a non-conference matchup
with the Birmingham-Southern Panthers on November 13. The Majors
own a perfect 3-0 mark against BSC since the Panthers joined the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2007. Millsaps is
averaging over 42 points per game against the Panthers. Last year
the Majors won a 38-20 decision and were led by quarterback Chris
Graves. Graves completed 27-of-39 passes for 336 yards and two
touchdowns. Shane Bowser added 68 yards on the ground to go along
with one touchdown.
Birmingham Southern jumped out to an early 17-0 lead and never
looked back, as they defeated Rhodes 41-19 in a
SCAC football game played at Fargason Field, on Saturday, November
6th. Senior running back Matt Gilbert led the Lynx offense
with 79 yards on 20 carries, and freshman defensive back Stanton
Brown led the defense with 12 tackles. Rhodes falls to 3-6 on the
season and will travel to Sewanee next week for their 2010 season
finale against the Sewanee Tigers in the annual Orgill Cup
game.
Sewanee was off this weekend. The Tigers will play
host to Rhodes College in their Homecoming game on Saturday,
November 13th and are still looking for their first
conference win. Sewanee sits at 1-8 on the season and 0-6 in SCAC
play.
Trinity lost a 26-7 game at Centre on Saturday
afternoon, giving Centre two wins in the last three meetings in
this series – both of which have come in Danville. With just
one game left, and falling to 3-6 on the season, the Tigers will
suffer the team’s first losing season since 1992 –
snapping a 17-year streak of winning seasons. Patrick Granchelli
rushed 21 times for 99 yards and the only touchdown for Trinity,
while Caleb Urban had six kick returns for 94 yards and a total of
141 all-purpose yards in the game. Trinity will host Austin College
in the season finale, which will be just the second home game in
seven weeks for the Tigers. The Tigers won two of the first three
games on the road, but the team has dropped its last two away from
home, and its last three games overall. The matchup with Austin
College will mark the 75th time that the two teams have met on the
gridiron, with Trinity holding a record of 39-29-6. The Tigers have
won 13 straight meetings, dating back to 1993. Prior to
Trinity’s current streak, Austin College had won 12
consecutive games in the series.
