SUWANEE, Ga. - The Centre College Colonels continued their winning streak with a shutout win over visiting Sewanee. The Colonels have now won nine straight games, dating back to week eight of the 2008 season.
Centre maintained sole possession of first place in the SCAC standings thanks in part to DePauw University's home win over defending SCAC champion Millsaps College. Centre (3-0 SCAC) has a one game lead on DePauw (2-1 SCAC) and Millsaps (2-1 SCAC).
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College fell
35-21 to Monterrey Tech (Mexico) over the weekend after the
visiting Wild Rams scored 25 straight points and the 'Roos were
unable to keep pace in the second half. The 'Roos took a 7-3 lead
in the second quarter when Andy Braly scored on a rush from five
yards out, but trailed 10-7 heading into the break. Austin College
took an early second half lead on a five yard touchdown run by
Brogan Funderburg to make it 14-10. However, that's when the Wild
Rams started their 25 point run to go ahead 35-14, with that streak
of points only broken when Blake Towery completed 3-of-4 passes for
82 yards and a touchdown throw to Austin Sherman late in the
fourth. Braly completed 11-of-19 passes for 108 yards and rushed 19
times for 54 yards, Funderburg had 12 carries for 53 yards and
added 58 yards on two catches, and Evan Coachman had eight tackles
and also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass.
Birmingham-Southern went on the road this week,
taking on Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Although they
scored first and kept a lead until the second quarter, the Panthers
were unable to hang on and lost, 41-14, to the Tigers in Trinity's
first home game of the season. BSC's two touchdowns came from
junior wide receiver David Langston on an 18-yard run in the first
quarter, and freshman wide receiver Johnny Lawroski on a 22-yard
pass from freshman quarterback Jimmy Stainback in the fourth
quarter. BSC returns home this week to face Centre College,
Saturday, at noon at Panther Stadium.
Centre posted its first shutout since 2007 and
moved to 5-0 for the first time since 2001 by defeating Sewanee
20-0 Saturday, Oct. 3 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky. The
Colonels not only improve to 5-0 overall, but also remain unbeaten
in league play with a 3-0 record. Centre began the 2001 season 6-0
on their way to a 9-1 overall record. The Colonels out-gained the
Tigers 474-107 in total offensive yards, including 303-94 advantage
in passing yards and a 171-13 edge in rushing yards. The defense
recorded not one, but two safeties and allowed only 13 yards
rushing, while also intercepting a pass to extend its streak with
at least one turnover to 48 consecutive games.
DePauw improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC
following a 29-27 win over Millsaps. The Tigers jumped out to a
16-0 first-half lead before the Majors scored near the end of the
half. DePauw extended the lead to 23-7, but the Majors eventually
closed the gap to 26-21. Jordan Havercamp nailed a 42-yard field
goal with 4:16 left to extend the lead to eight points. It also
capped a drive that took 9:15 off the clock with 16 plays covering
48 yards. The Majors scored on the third play of the next series,
but Thomas Wrona tackled Shane Bowser short of the end zone after
Bowser caught a two-point conversion pass from Chris Graves. Spud
Dick completed 28 of 34 passes for 372 yards with three touchdowns
and no interceptions. His third scoring pass was the 57th of his
career and broke the DePauw career record. After connecting on six
of his first 11 passes, Dick completed 19 straight from the first
through fourth quarters which was just two shy of tying the
Division III record. Alex Koors caught eight passes for 212 yards
and two scores, while Bryan Mulligan had seven catches for 60 yards
and the other score. Wrona led the defense with seven tackles,
while Alex Fitch and Scott Mason each had sacks and Fitch had four
hurries. In all, DePauw's defense totaled seven tackles for losses
of 27 yards and held Millsaps to 20 rushing yards for the third
straight sub 100-yard game. Havercamp, who missed the last two
games due to injury, was successful on all three field goal
attempts. The Tigers travel to Rhodes on Saturday.
Millsaps (3-2, 2-1
SCAC) lost its first conference road game in the Mike DuBose era
(11-1) after a 29-27 loss at DePauw on Saturday. Ball control was a
key factor. The Tigers possessed the ball for 42:24 and had three
drives of 15 or more plays including the game's opening series. The
combination of QB Spud Dick and WR Alex Koors overpowered the
Majors’ defense, as they allowed a season-worst 466 total
yards. Millsaps made a strong comeback down 16-0 in the first half,
rallying behind a monster afternoon from WR Michael Galatas who had
four catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns. The Majors had a
chance to tie it late, scoring with just over three minutes left,
but were unable to convert the two-point conversion to possibly
send the game into overtime. Millsaps will travel out of conference
this weekend, taking on Huntingdon College (3-1) who takes the
place of the departed Colorado College.
Rhodes junior linebacker Andrew Meier leads the
SCAC in tackles at 53, averaging 10.6 tackles a game. Meier also is
second in the SCAC in sacks (5.5) and second in the SCAC in tackles
for loss (8.5). Junior cornerback Pete Bilan leads the SCAC in
passes defended with 10. Bilan is also second in the SCAC with 4
interceptions. The Lynx lead the SCAC in passing defense, allowing
158 yards a game through the air. The Lynx also lead the SCAC in
sacks, recording 17 sacks in 5 games. Freshman wide receiver Jack
Lartigue caught a career best 7 passes for 87 yards in the Lynx
23-0 loss at Washington University.
Sewanee played SCAC football at Centre College on
Saturday and Centre jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first half
with a safety and a touchdown. The Colonels secured the final 20-0
tally in the second half with 12 more points. Geoff Marolda
highlighted the special teams effort for Sewanee with a 42-yard
punt average, including three punts over 50 yards and a long of 81
yards. Quarterback Patrick Shelton completed 10 passes for 94 yards
to lead the Sewanee offense, while fellow senior Trey Reliford led
the Tiger defense with 11 total tackles. Sewanee is now 0-4 and is
0-2 in the SCAC. Sewanee will host Austin College for homecoming
this weekend.
Trinity bounced back from its first loss of the
season with a 41-14 win over Birmingham-Southern College on
Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fell behind 7-0 early in the game,
but scored 41 unanswered points to earn the victory. After leading
20-7 at halftime, Trinity used more than 11 minutes on two
third-quarter scoring drives to put the game out of reach. Caleb
Urban electrified the crowd with two second-quarter touchdowns of
at least 49 yards. On Trinity’s first drive of the second
quarter, Urban took a Patrick Dickinson pass 62 yards for a score
that put the Tigers on top 13-7. On the next offensive possession,
Urban took a reverse near midfield and turned into a 49-yard
touchdown run. Dickinson, in his first start as the Tiger
quarterback, completed 10-13 passes for 150 yards and one
touchdown. He also rushed for two touchdowns in the third quarter,
scoring from 12 and 10 yards out. Chris Baer led the Tigers with 86
yards rushing on 13 carries, and the Trinity team finished with 268
total yards rushing. Jeff Carapetyan led the Tiger defense with
seven tackles and three quarterback hurries, while Ronald
Satterthwaite had six stops.
