LONDON, England - On Saturday, May 29, the
Centre College football team took on the British National Football
Team, the Great Britain Lions, in London, England, at the Crystal
Palace and the Colonels won by a score of, 10-9.
Junior Patrick Barsotti (Danville, Ky.) gave the Colonels the 3-0
lead in the first quarter after connecting on a field goal.
The Great Britain Lions would tie the game up at 3-3 early in the
second quarter after they recovered the ball on a fumble during the
opening kick-off.
Neither team was able to score during the remainder of the second
quarter or in the third quarter as the defense for each team played
well.
Centre would then take the 10-3 lead in the fourth quarter as
junior Drew Sanderson (Mayfield, Ky.) completed a 96 yard play
action pass to freshman Andrew Tuller (Prospect, Ky.) who would
score the touchdown.
The Lions would respond with a touchdown of their own late in the
fourth quarter, but freshman Michael Del Prince (Cincinnati, Ohio)
blocked the extra point to make it a 10-9 game.
Centre has beaten the British National Football Team twice, after
also winning in 2005 by a score of 27-14.
"The Lions were a much improved football team from what we saw in
2005. The British National Football Team was well prepared for this
game. They were a very big team and they were also physical up
front, along with being quicker," said head football coach Andy
Frye.
"We were fortunate to play everyone and it was an exciting game up
until the end," Frye finished.
In June the British National Football Team will be competing for
the European Cup. The Lions are made up of the All-Stars from the
40 American Football Teams that play in Great Britain.
Centre will open up their season against Hanover College on
Saturday, September 4 at home in Danville, Ky. Kick-off is set for
7:30 p.m.
