NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Not only was Sewanee's Tyler
Brantley named a Charles W. Hawkins and Joe C. Davis Collegiate
Scholar-Athlete Tuesday night in Nashville, he also received
the CR Bickerstaff/Coach Bill Pace University Scholar-Athlete Award
at the National Football Foundation's Middle Tennessee Chapter 43rd
annual awards dinner. The latter award is presented to the top
university football scholar-athlete in Middle Tennessee. The award
criteria are "scholarship, sportsmanship and value to the team."
Among those nominated were athletes from MTSU, Austin Peay and
Vanderbilt, among others.
Brantley, a senior natural resources major, was a four-year
letterman of the football team and led the Tigers this year with 71
tackles as a defensive back. Brantley was an All-SCAC selection as
a senior and was named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll all four
years. He is a Wilkins Scholar, has served as president of the
Honor Council, VP of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is
a member of the Order of Gownsmen. The Danielsville, Georgia native
taught underprivileged schoolchildren in Tanzania, climbed Mount
Kilimanjaro, co-founded the B.A.M. organization which helps build
strong, healthy leaders in the world and has volunteered for his
fraternity and his church.
"It was just a great evening to see Tyler recognized among his
peers as well as so many high school players and coaches. Tyler
represents Sewanee so well as a student, football player, and a
humanitarian. It was a great evening to spend with him and Sewanee
should be very proud," said Sewanee head Coach Robert
Black.
