John Tucker, Trinity University, Hitter of the Week (Week 1)

John Tucker of Trinity University, a senior catcher/infielder from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Hitter of the Week for games played from Saturday, February 2 through February 10. 

Tucker led the fourth-ranked Tiger baseball team to a pair of wins over No. 8 SUNY Cortland to open up the 2019 season. Tucker hit .556 (5-9) with two runs scored and seven RBI in the weekend series, which marked the first regular season meeting between the two teams. In Saturday’s season opener, Tucker drove a single up the middle to tie the game 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth inning, setting up the Tigers for the walkoff win. He also drove in a run and scored another to tie the game in the sixth inning after Trinity had fallen behind 4-0. On Sunday, Tucker finished 3-4 with a double and five RBI to lead the Tigers to the series clincher. He began the game with a run-scoring single that put Trinity up 2-1 at the time and kept alive an inning that finished with his Tigers leading 4-1. He later cleared the bases with a three-run double in the seventh to put Trinity up 9-3 and essentially put the game out of reach. Last season, Tucker was third on the team with a .340 batting average, going 55-162 at the plate, scoring 35 runs and driving in 32 more to tie for third on the team in RBI.=

Other Outstanding Performances:

Junior catcher Jessup Scott of Dallas collected five RBIs while posting a .429 batting average as the Crusaders opened the season with four wins in their first five games of the season. Texas Lutheran Sophomore centerfielder Cullen Motsinger notched five hits and three RBIs with a .417 batting average to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-0 start. Freshman outfielder Sam Velazquez of Schreiner guided the Mountaineers to their first victory of the season posting a .556 batting average with two hits, a run and a RBI.
