
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- SCAC baseball action continued with both Southwestern and Trinity making their sea- son-debuts.
No. 3 Trinity kicked off the 2020 season going 4-0 in the Concordia (Texas) Classic over the weekend with a pair of wins over LeTourneau (12-7, 6-3) and victories over La Verne (2-1) and host and No. 23-ranked Concordia (6-2). In the season opener against La Verne, Tyler Pettie and MJ Metz both had a pair
of hits for the Tigers and Mason Meredith added a solo home run. In Saturday’s 12-7 victory over LeTou neau, Michael Herrera was 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs and scored a pair of runs. The Tigers got their third victory of the season over Concordia with James Nittoli allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters. In Sunday’s win against LeTourneau, four Tigers had two hits, including Jack Vonderhaar going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
No. 22 Texas Lutheran (4-2) completed a three-game sweep over Hardin-Simmons over the weekend. In game one, Bulldog freshman Tyler Post singled, doubled, and hit a two-run home run in the fifth to give TLU a 7-6 lead. Post finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Alex Cornman led the Bulldogs the following day, going a combined 6-for-9 with six RBI, four runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and a home run.
Dallas (4-1) closed out the weekend with a two-game sweep over Howard Payne on Sat- urday. The Crusaders won the first game 7-2 after notching 10 hits and six stolen bases. Nathan Patton led the Crusaders with three hits - two of which were doubles - and added two runs scored. In game two, five different UD players had two hits each, with Joseph Vondrachek knocking in three.
In its first series of the 2020 season, Southwestern took two of three games against Sul Ross State, bouncing back after a season-opening loss with a pair of 12-run victories. Hayden Craig led the Pirates with a 3-for-5 performance and had two RBIs and two runs scored. John Sparks tossed three scoreless innings, striking out six while giving up only one hit and one walk.
St. Thomas (3-7) also took two of three game over the weekend, taking the series from McMurry. The Celts claimed the doubleheader sweep the first day, with Pierce Taylor re- cording his first victory pitching after tossing one and two-thirds scoreless innings. In the second game, Jason Brown went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, as four Celts collected two base hits in the game.
Centenary (4-1) split games over the weekend against Louisiana College. The Gents took game one 3-1 as Matthew Devillier tossed a seven-inning complete game. The right- hander allowed for just one run on five hits while walking two and striking out five. Cody Crowder and Preston Ludwick combined for five of Centenary’s eight hits in the victory.
Schreiner (2-3-1) had a 1-2 week against Mary Hardin-Baylor, which included a 12-3 win on Saturday. Andrew Castaneda earned his first win of the season going six innings and striking out five in the game two victory.
