Centenary's Schimpf, Southwestern's Cates Named First Team Academic All-District

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Will Cates of Southwestern University and Michael Schimpf of Centenary College have been named First Team Academic All-District selections by CoSIDA. Full Release

Cates earned the honor for the second straight year, also being named to the All-American team for the 2015 season. Cates earned first-team All-SCAC honors for the second straight year as an outfielder and was named to the SCAC All-Tournament team. The outfielder from Houston maintains a 3.78 GPA in biochemistry and was named to the team for the second consecutive season. He will graduate from Southwestern this weekend and attend medical school next year.

Cates led the Pirates to a second place finish at the SCAC baseball tournament, closing out the year with a .388 average, .676 slugging percentage and .458 OBP. He also scored 45 runs and drove in 26 on 66 hits this year posting 11 doubles, 7 triples, 8 home runs and stole 28 bases. 

Schimpf was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team as an outfielder and was a first-team All-SCAC honoree. The Shreveport native posts a 3.92 GPA in history with a french minor and was named to the All-SCAC second-team after the 2014 season. 

Schimpf closed out the year with a .425 batting average, scoring 45 runs on 65 hits with 32 RBI's. He tallied eight doubles, three triples and four home runs for a .595 slugging percentage. Schimpf also stole a team-best 11 bases. 

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

First-team Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
