Baseball Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Conference play opened up this past weekend as six of the seven SCAC schools took the field to open up the conference season.

Austin College
The 'Roos finally returned to the field this past weekend, taking on Texas Lutheran to open up SCAC play. Austin College dropped two out of three to go to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play. Austin College dropped their first game, 3-2, despite a brilliant effort from Blaine Tew, who pitched 7.0 innings. James Arguello finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Dylan Day went 2-for-5 with a run scored. The 'Roos would drop game two, losing the series, 7-3, but responded with a 9-1 win to wrap up the weekend and earn their first conference win. In game two, Arguello finished 2-for-5 with a RBI and Will Schommer went 2-for-4. In the final game of the series, Brett Moody pitched a gem, surrendering just one run on seven hits, striking out four batters in a complete game victory. Chance Hatchel finished 3-for-5 with a RBI and Will Schommer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Austin Dudley finished the game 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Josh Coughennower had two RBIs in the win. The 'Roos will take a break from confernece play and head over to Farmers Branch, Texas for a pair of games against Oklahoma Baptist and Dallas Christian. 

Centenary College 
The Gents opened up conference play with a roadtrip to 11th-ranked Trinity, where the Gents dropped two out of three games to the Tigers, salvaging the series with a win in game three. Centenary moved to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play. In the opener, a six run eighth inning broke the game wide open at the Tigers took a 10-4 victory. Michael Schimpf and Cole Lavergne each tallied multiple-hit efforts in the outing while the Gents gathered RBI from Aaron Quantanilla, Khalen Simpson and Chris Zapata. Quantanilla’s pair of RBI came off a two-run homerun in the sixth inning. Trinity would win the series in game two with an 8-3 win, but the Gents responded in game three with a 6-5 win. In game two, Chris Zapata paced the squad with three hits in the affair while Brooks Williams and Schimpf joined with multiple hit outs with two hits each. In the final game, Matt Posey (1-0) gathered his first win of the season in a relief effort. Posey tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing just four hits with a strikeout and a walk in the effort. Zapata led the team with three hits in the outing. Centenary will make up a postponed game against Texas-Tyler from earlier this year on Tuesday before hosting Schreiner University in a three game series this upcoming weekend. 

University of Dallas
The Crusaders took two out of three over Schreiner in their conference opener, moving to 6-12 overall and 2-1 in SCAC play. Dallas did drop the first game, 7-4, before responding in game two later that day with an 8-6 win. Luciano Villanueva notched the first of two multi-hit games with a 2-for-5 display in the box to go with a RBI. Jake Pierce and Patch Healy also added a pair of base knocks in the setback. The Crusaders then snapped a 10-losing streak wtih an 8-6, come-from-behind, win. Villanueva was a factor in the majority of UD's offense in the second game, scoring three runs. Trevor Keele paced UD's offense in this one with three hits to go with a double to go along with a save. San Roman, who knocked what would be the game-winner, joined Villanueva with a multi-hit effort. The Crusaders took the rubber match thanks en part to a two run eighth inning for a 5-3 win. Alex Stack finished with a strong performance, driving in two and ripping the final double of the afternoon for Dallas. William Marshall earned the win while Keele earned a save. The Crusaders will return home for the first time since February 18th as they welcome in Southwestern for a three game series. 

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers opened conference play up by taking one of three from the Dallas Crusaders to move to 4-14 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play. In the first game, the Mountaineers earned 7-4 win behind Jayme Kidder, who went seven innings to earn the win. Connor Ver Schuur and Sam Pistrui each had two hits in the outing while Brad Holmes drove in a pair of runs. In the second game, the Crusaders came from behind to take an 8-6 victory and even the series. Holmes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Bret Hill and Ver Schuur each went 2-for-4. In the rubber match, Schreiner's Charlie Stewart along with Blake Rowan gave the Mountaineers a great outing on the bump, but it was not enough, as Dallas won the series with a 5-3 win. Hagen Fryrear led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 while Hill finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The Mountaineers will hit the road for a three-game, conference series against Centenary this upcoming weekend. 

Southwestern University
The Pirates only played one game this past week, dropping a 12-4 decision to Mary Hardin-Baylor as they fall to 5-7 on the season. Colten Shea led the way going 3-for-4 from the plate with a double and two stolen bases. Cates was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and one stolen base. Clayton Haag suffered the loss in two innings of work, allowing eight runs, five earned, on three hits while walking three and striking out three. The Pirates did play one game on Sunday, defeating Cal Lutheran, 13-0, in Tucson, Ariz. However, no stats have been reported at this time. The Pirates will remain in Arizona for the week, taking on St. Thomas (MN) on Monday followed by a doubleheader against Wesleyan (CT) on Tuesday. Southwestern will remain on the road as they go to Irving to take on the University of Dallas in their conference series opener. 

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs went 2-1 over the weekend, improve to 13-7 overall and 2-1 in SCAC play, as they took two out of three over Austin College in the conference opener. In a 3-2 win in the first game, the Bulldogs received a strong start from Aaron Aleman, who improve to 3-2 with the win, tossing 6.2 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a pair of walks. The senior struck out eight, marking the third time this season he's struck out at least that many in an outing. Justin Law led the way with a 3-for-4 night. The junior scored the game-winning run off that wild pitch in the sixth. All three of his hits were singles. The Bulldogs split the following day, earning a 7-3 win to clinch the series before dropping the finale 9-1. In Saturday's first game, six different Bulldogs drove in runs. Leading the offense was Tony Gennusa. The senior went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot, scoring two runs and driving in one. He blasted his first home of the season in the 4th inning. Klaus Bohrmann was the other Bulldog who left the yard on Saturday. The senior cranked his second homer of the year, hitting a solo shot in the fifth inning to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead. Thomas Harwell earned the win in 6.0 innings of work, striking out two. The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend as they remain at home for a three game series against 11th-ranked Trinity. 

#11 Trinity University
The 11th-ranked Tiger baseball team went 2-2 this weekend to move to 14-4 on the season and 2-1 in SCAC play. The week began with a 7-4 loss to Our Lady of the Lake as Colin Serkowski batted 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Connor Moore went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run. The Tigers then opened conference play with a 10-4 win to open SCAC play, thanks en part to an eight run eighth inning. Austin Singer finished with a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Singer's round-tripper was his fourth this season, which leads all Tiger hitters. Zack Speer remains unbeaten on the season The Tigers then clinched the series with an 8-3 win in game two. Mike Walker (3-1) took the win in the opening game for the Tigers, allowing three runs on seven hits through 6.2 innings, and striking out five.  Troy Nelson finished off the win, pitching 2.1 shutout innings, and allowing just three hits. The opening game featured a 14-hit attack from the Tiger offense, led by Drew Butler's 3-4 performance. Nick Jewett also went 2-4 with two runs scored in the first half of the DH, while Serkowski was 2-4 with two RBI. Trinity would drop the final contest, 6-5. Trinity returns to the diamond on Tuesday as they take on Concordia (TX) before hitting the road for a three game road series against Texas Lutheran.
