SHREVEPORT, La. -- For the first time since 1995, the team coming in with one loss on the day won both games as third-seeded Trinity University defeated top-seeded Centenary College, 6-4 and 10-0 (7) to claim their third straight SCAC title and fifth title in the last six years. Trinity becomes the first team since the Southwestern University Pirates (1996-98) to three-peat as champions of the SCAC. They will participate in their sixth straight NCAA Regional as they earn the conference's automatic bid. It is their 10th SCAC Championship in the sport of baseball which is the most in SCAC history.
In the second game, the Tigers wasted little time to jump all over the Gents to take an 8-0 lead after three innings of play.
It was all Mike Walker needed as he pitched a complete game, allowing no runs on four hits to go with four strikeouts. He was dominant and seemed to get stronger throughout the game, slowing down a good hitting Gents team.
Trinity would add a run in the fifth and one more in the seventh as Brody Fehmel doubled to right center to score Jose Santos and send the Tigers into euphoria as they earned the elimination rule win.
Fehmel finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI while Nick Jewett added a 3-for-4 day in the contest with a RBI and a run scored. Austin Singer drove in a pair of runs while Connor Moore, and Jeremy Wolf each drove in a run. Santos was 1-for-1 with four runs scored in the contest.
Jake McFarland was saddled with the loss for Centenary, pitching only 1.1 innings and allowing four
earned runs on three hits. The Gents used seven pitchers in the contest. Matt Posey was maybe the best of the bunch, pitching one inning and allowing no hits or walks while striking out one.
Trinity is only the third team in SCAC history to win the final two games in the SCAC Baseball
Championship Game and the first since 1995, which was also done by the Tigers of Trinity over Millsaps College. It was the seventh time in SCAC history a second game had been forced and the first time since 2008.
Centenary ends their season at 24-17 and will be recognized as the 2015 SCAC Baseball Regular Season Champions.
The Tigers, who sit at 33-12, will more than likely head to the West Regional in Tyler, Texas in two weeks. They will officially find out their destination and opponent on May 10th at Midnight.
