Baseball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

Austin College got off to a 1-2 start to open the year, falling by scores of 6-2 and 4-2 in the first two games of a three game set against Schreiner before earning a 5-1 win to close out the series. Todd Takabuki had a strong weekend at the plate, hitting .333 with a double and three RBI, and Will Schommer had two doubles and also plated two runs. Hunter Wilson had two RBI in the 5-1 win, and Marcos Molina had a home run and two RBI in the three game series. Marshall Korn pitched 6.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts in the series opening loss, while Blaine Tew took a no-hitter into the sixth on his way to 8.1 innings pitched while allowing one run on just three hits to earn the victory. 

Centenary went 1-2 on the week including a doubleheader split with No. 11 Texas-Tyler on Saturday evening. Chris Jones and Marc Martinez paced the Gents at the dish both hitting .400-plus over the span of the three games. Martinez led the Maroon and White with six hits for the weekend and a clip at the plate of .500. Jones batted .417 on the weekend and was second on the team with five hits. Each drove in a run with Jones scoring twice during the weekend and recording two walks. Paul Arcement led the hurlers seeing in action in both contests against the Patriots. Arcement logged the save in the Gents 8-7, come-from-behind victory – his first of the season – and was the starter in the second outing tossing four innings of scoreless baseball with four strikeouts and four walks. Centenary returns to the diamond on Saturday as they host the University of Dallas at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.

Dallas went 2-1 on the week in their first home games of the 2014 season. On Friday, in Irving, Texas, head coach Fraser Holmes' squad triumphed 8-4 (F/9) over East Texas Baptist University. On Saturday, at Crusader Field, the navy and white won 4-0 (F/7), before falling 4-2 (F/9) to the Tigers. Dallas begins their conference slate this weekend in Shreveport, La., at Centenary -- Saturday (2 p.m. 1x7, 1x9) and Sunday (1 p.m. 1x9).

Schreiner went 2-1 on the road vs. Austin College. On Friday night, Schreiner won 6-2 and came back on Saturday to win game one of a double header (4-2) before falling in game two (5-1). The Mountaineers will host Whitman College (WA), Lewis & Clark (OR), and Pacific (OR).

Southwestern dropped a heartbreaking series at LeTourneau recording 23 hits in the three-game series. The Pirates fell to 0-7 on the year, but four of the losses have been by two runs or fewer. Offensively, the Pirates were led by catcher Charlie St. Clair who finished the weekend 5-for-9 at the plate with three RBIs and four runs scored.  On the mound Southwestern saw two outstanding starting pitching performances fall short as Brett Marcom threw a complete game on Saturday but was dealt the loss. Senior Jason Stading threw six solid innings in the series opener but earned a no-decision as he only allowed one run and three strike outs. Southwestern will face UT-Dallas in a mid-week match-up Tuesday before the home opener against Trinity in a non-conference three-game series.

Texas Lutheran went 2-2 during the week with an 11-3 road win at Concordia Texas, a 7-5 road loss at University of Texas at Tyler, a 1-0 neutral site loss to LSU-Alexandria, and a 4-3 neutral site win over LSU-Alexandria. The two games against LSU-Alexandria were of the walk-off variety. Senior outfielder Christian DeBlanc drove in pinch-runner Holden Bryant for the winning run against LSU-Alexandria (late game). In the road win over Concordia Texas, on Wednesday, the Bulldogs turned a 2-0 deficit to an 11-3 win thanks to a 10-run fourth inning. The Bulldogs sent 15 batters to the plate in the 10-run fourth. TLU trailed 2-0 entering the frame. In the big inning, Ryan Hill tripled with the bases loaded and added an RBI single in his second at-bat of the fourth. Tyler Carollo also had two hits in the fourth and produced two RBI on a pair of singles. Von Wendel,  Keaton Bohrmann and Klaus Bohrmann also registered RBI in the frame. Hill finished the game 3-for-4 with the four runs driven home, and Carollo went 4-for-4 with two RBI. The Bohrmann brothers, Klaus and Keaton, combined for five hits, three RBI and five runs scored. Klaus went 3-for-5, and Keaton drove in a pair of runs in a 2-for-5 performance. Conner Capdau picked up the win in relief. He pitched two innings, struck out two, walked two and allowed one earned run. Capdau moved to 1-0.

No. 6 Trinity took two out of three games in a weekend series at Millsaps College, including a 13-10 extra-inning win in Sunday's series finale. The Tigers took the opening game 11-2 behind Zack Speer's 10th career win, then lost 5-3 in the second half of Saturday's doubleheader.  Trinity rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings, then scored three times in the 11th to take the win.  The Tigers hammered out 20 hits in the final game, led by a 5-6 day for Chris Bianchi, and a 4-7 afternoon for Carter McEachern. Senior Christian Muscarello collected his 200th career hit for the Tigers over the weekend, becoming the 10th Trinity player to reach the milestone. Trinity is back in action this weekend, opening up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Southwestern University.  The Tigers return home the following weekend, hosting Centenary in another three-game SCAC series.
