Baseball Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

Austin College had a tough week, going 0-5 with single losses against East Texas Baptist and Castleton State while also getting swept in a three game series against Texas Lutheran. The ‘Roos fell 2-1 against ETBU before dropping their games against TLU by scores of 10-4, 8-2, and 9-2, and fell short in their comeback attempt against Castleton 9-7. Daniel Keene had a strong week at the plate, batting .429 with a triple and four RBI, and Dylan Day batted .400. Marcos Molina drove in four runs and had a double for the week. 

Centenary dropped all three games of a SCAC series this weekend to the University of Dallas. The Gents were held to a .222 batting average and outscored 16-5 by the Crusaders. Chris Jones led the Maroon and White at the dish collecting four hits and going .364 at the plate. Michael Schimpf joined Jones hitting .375 as the duo were the only two Gents hitters to bat .333-plus for the complete series. Paul Arecement struck out eight UD batters in his complete-game performance despite being saddled with the 2-1 loss.Holden Novak tossed four, scoreless innings in a relief appearance. Centenary returns to action on Tuesday against cross-town rival LSU-Shreveport before returning to conference action at Trinity this weekend.

Dallas went 3-0 week against conference foe Centenary in non-conference contests. On Saturday, in Shreveport, La., the Crusaders won 4-1 (F/7) and then 2-1 (F/9) over Centenary. Game three was played on Sunday, and head coach Fraser Holmes’ squad navigated to a 10-3 (F/9) victory to sweep the Gents. Dallas hosts Southwestern this week for a three-game set -- Saturday (12 p.m. 1x7, 1x9) and Sunday (1 p.m. 1x9). 

Schreiner went 1-5 on the week with home losses to Whitman (5-14, 6-19), Lewis & Clark (6-18, 2-6), Pacific (3-13), and a home victory over Lewis & Clark (13-2).   This week Schreiner will host Pacific (Monday, Feb. 24th) and Texas Lutheran (Friday, Feb 28th and Saturday, Mar. 1st).

Southwestern finished the week 1-3 after starting with a 6-3 win against UT-Dallas. A solid pitching performance from Jacob Kendra helped the Pirates hold the Comets to just three runs. Second baseman Jake Pawelek finished with two RBIs and went 2-for-4 to help Southwestern to its first win of the season. The Pirates also dropped a three-game non-conference series to Trinity starting with a heartbreaking loss on Friday 8-7. Trinity rallied in the top of the ninth for the win as Southwestern starter Jason Stading earned no-decision throwing five innings and scattering nine hits. Southwestern fell in two tough losses on Saturday as Charlie St. Clair led the Pirates going 3-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBIs. The Pirates travels to the University of Dallas for a three-game non-conference series starting with a double-header on Saturday.


Texas Lutheran went 3-2 during the week, dropping home non-conference games with Mary Hardin-Baylor and Pacific (Ore.) sandwiched around a three-game home series sweep of Austin College. The Bulldogs’ overall record stands at 8-4. Against UMHB, the Bulldogs gave up eight walks on the day and couldn’t battle back from a 7-1 deficit, losing 9-4 at home.  Mary Hardin-Baylor scored two runs in the top of the sixth to stretch its lead to six, the largest of the game. At that point the Bulldog offense sprang to life, clawing its way back into the game and eventually cutting the deficit to 7-4 in the seventh. In game one against Austin College, the Bulldogs tallied 15 hits and 10 runs in a 10-4 non-conference win Friday. At TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field, the Bulldogs broke open a 2-0 game with four runs in the sixth and threes run in the seventh. TLU starter Aaron Aleman pitched seven innings and allowed just one earned run. He struck out five, scattered six hits and did not issue a walk. Aleman improved to 2-1. In the doubleheader sweep Saturday, the Bulldogs defeated Austin College 8-2 and 9-2. The Bulldogs opened big leads by the middle innings of both games to secure wins seven and eight on the young year. In the two wins, TLU junior shortstop Zach Jacobs drove in six and went a combined 6-for-7 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Jacobs had a pair of sacrifice flies in the first game and tripled in the late game.On Sunday, Pacific University (Ore.) pitcher/designated hitter Kyle Treadway pitched eight strong innings and drove in the eventual winning run on a fielder’s choice to lead the Boxers to a 2-1 road win over Texas Lutheran. Treadway (1-0) struck out seven and worked around two walks and five hits. Topher Mood notched the save with a one-hit ninth.

No. 6 Trinity swept all three games of its opening SCAC series of the season at Southwestern over the weekend, improving the team’s record to 8-1 on the season. The Tigers opened the series with late-inning heroics for the second straight game.  Trinity scored three runs in the ninth to take an 8-7 victory in Friday night’s series opener, then powered through a Saturday doubleheader with wins of 9-0 and 17-5. Pat Hirschberg became the sixth player in Trinity history to hit two triples in one game, though he is the first since 2010 (Dominick Robusto).  Hirschberg broke the Tiger single season record with seven triples last season, and he is now just three from tying the career record set from 2000-03 by Kenneth Sharp. Trinity will continue its SCAC schedule with a three-game series in San Antonio against Centenary College.  The Tigers and Gents played five regular season games last season, with Centenary winning four of the five meetings; however, Trinity earned a pair of wins over Centenary at the SCAC Tournament to win the conference title.  The teams open the weekend series on Friday night, followed by a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
