LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity University has clinched the No. 1 seed in the SCAC Baseball Tournament and will host the 2014 SCAC Baseball Championships. Centenary and Texas Lutheran have also punched their tickets to the SCAC Tournament though their seeding has not been determined yet. It'll all come down to the final weekend for the final spot in the SCAC Tournament as Dallas and Southwestern square off in a three game series in Georgetown.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College fell in all four of its
games against Central Oklahoma and Centenary over the weekend,
falling 10-2 on Tuesday and 7-5 in game one on Friday before being
edged 14-5 and 8-1 on Saturday to bring the team’s overall
record to 4-28 this season. The ‘Roos struggled on the mound
all weekend as they couldn’t slow down Centneary’s
potent offense. Austin College has completed its conference season
and finishes 2-16 in the SCAC and will not complete in the SCAC
Tournament. They still have seven non-conference games to go
starting on Tuesday against Ozarks followed by a weekend series
against Ecclesia.
Centenary moved to second in the SCAC with a sweep of Austin College over the weekend. The Gents sit at 10-5 in the conference and are back at .500 overall. Aaron Quintanilla paced the squad at the dish over the weekend batting .500 with multiple hits in all three outings. The freshman’s biggest day came in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader as he collected back-to-back triples while driving in four runs. In all, five Gents hit .400-plus helping the squad to a .382 average over the weekend. Marc Martinez, who batted .400 over the three games, drove in a team-best six runs one better than Quintanilla. Taylor Reed and Quintanilla each tallied a team-leading six hits. Taylor Henry paced the Gents’ hurlers with two wins in his two appearances. Henry logged a total of 6.0 innings on the mound and allowed just one earned run while fanning six batters – a team-best. Holden Novak recorded the remaining decision for the Maroon and White with 7.2 innings of work and three strikeouts against five hits and a run. Devin Bench tallied his second save of the season with 1.1, hitless frames. Centenary returns to action this weekend as the Gents host Trinity.
Dallas went 2-1 on the week in conference competition. On Saturday, in Irving, Texas, head coach Fraser Holmes’ squad won 15-0 (F/7) and then 2-1 (F/9) over Schreiner. After a two-hour rain delay on Sunday, the Crusaders celebrated senior day; Second baseman Mark Carlson and center fielder Alex Thornton were honored in a pregame ceremony. The Mountaineers avoided the sweep, as they defeated the navy and white in a 7-2 (F/9) bout. Sitting at No. 4 in the SCAC standings, Dallas heads to Georgetown, Texas, this week to battle fifth-place Southwestern -- Saturday (6 p.m.; 1x9) and Sunday (1 p.m.; 1x7, 1x9). Vying for the last spot in the SCAC championship tournament, both teams are 7-8 in league play.
Schreiner lost this weekends series against the visiting Trinity Tigers, eliminating them from postseason contention. The Mountaineers will look to finish their season on a high note as they travel to Seguin, Texas to take on the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in the series finale.

Southwestern saw their four-game winning streak end as the Pirates dropped a mid-week game to Hardin Simmons and was swept by Emory University in Atlanta. The Pirates continued one of the toughest schedules in the nation against an Eagles team that moved to 24-9 while the Southwestern stands at 10-26. However, the Southwestern enters the final weekend of SCAC play with a chance to clinch the No. 4 seed in the SCAC Championship Tournament the first weekend of May. A series win against University of Dallas would give the Pirates the final spot in the tournament while a win by UD would push the Crusaders into the tournament.
Texas Lutheran dropped all four games last week, losing a non-conference road game to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and falling in all three road SCAC games to No. 6/9-ranked Trinity. The Bulldogs lost 6-3 in Belton to UMHB and fell 4-0, 5-2 and 9-3 in San Antonio to the Tigers. The three losses in SCAC play dropped the Bulldogs into third place in the SCAC standings with three games to play. The Bulldogs are one game behind Centenary (La.) for the second spot. TLU holds the tie-breaker advantage over Centenary should the teams tie in the regular-season standings. Regardless, Trinity will host the SCAC Tournament, set for May 2-4 in San Antonio at the Trinity Baseball Field. TLU hosts Schreiner in Seguin on Thursday and Friday for the final three-game conference series of the season. Friday is Family Day at Katt-Isbel Field. Thursday’s first game of the series begins at 2 p.m. Friday’s doubleheader starts at noon. All three games will have live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com.
In a showdown between the top two teams in the conference standings, No. 9/6 Trinity swept a three-game SCAC series sweep against Texas Lutheran University over the weekend. The Tigers won 4-0 on Friday night to open the series, then swept a Saturday doubleheader 5-2 and 9-3 to clinch the top seed at the SCAC Tournament. That also means that Trinity will host the SCAC Baseball Tournament for the first time since 1999. Trinity finishes off its regular season schedule with four games on the road this week. The Tigers travel to Belton, Texas, to finish the season series with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday. Trinity won 5-4 in 12 innings against the Crusaders earlier this season. Over the weekend, Trinity faces off against Centenary in a three-game SCAC series. Earlier in the year, the Tigers swept a three-game non-conference series from the Gents – outscoring Centenary 22-3.
