LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - SCAC play continued as the No. 2 team in the nation, the Trinity Tigers, continue to roll, winning 14 games in a row and earning a conference weekend sweep over Southwestern to move to 6-0 on the year. Centenary picked up four wins this week including a weekend sweep over Dallas to start 2-0. TLU also remains in the thick of things with a sweep over Austin College to go to 5-1.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College fell in all three games
against Texas Lutheran last weekend, falling by scores of 2-1 and
4-1 on Friday, and 6-2 on Saturday. The ‘Roos got strong
pitching performances from Blaine Tew and Marshall Korn, with Korn
allowing just two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work in the
tough 2-1 loss, with the Bulldogs getting a solo homer in the top
of the seventh to win it. Tew allowed just one earned run on five
hits but took the loss in the 4-1 defeat in game two, as the
‘Roos had a 2.88 earned-run-average as a team for the
weekend. Gus Daniel had a big weekend with a .500 batting average,
and also threw out six of seven runners on stolen base attempts
from behind the plate. Marcos Molina batted .429 and Daniel Keene
hit .400, while Hunter Wilson batted .333 with an RBI.
Centenary picked up four victories over the week including a SCAC sweep of Dallas on the weekend. The Gents scored 52 runs including 40 against the Crusaders while the pitching staff registered a 4.50 ERA en route to the wins. Nic Parrott led the squad with a .625 batting averaging –second on the team – while driving in 11 runs which led the team. Parrott went 10-for-16 at the dish including four extra base hits (a double, two triples and homerun). Dakota Brown posted the team’s best clip at the plate with a .643. Taylor Henry logged 12 innings on the bump and garnered a pair of wins for the Maroon and White. Henry struck out 15 batters in the two appearances while posting a 3.00 ERA. Centenary returns to action this week traveling to Jarvis Christian on Tuesday before hosting Southwestern in a three-game, weekend series.
Dallas went 1-4 on the week. On Wednesday, in Farmers Branch, Texas, head coach Fraser Holmes’ squad won 8-5 (F/7) over Dallas Christian College, before falling 12-6 (F/7) in game two of the road doubleheader. On Saturday, in Irving, Texas, the Crusaders were edged 5-4 (F/11) by Centenary (La.). On Sunday, the conference foes needed to finish the second game of the series as a result of storms the previous afternoon. Play resumed in the top-of-the-third, with the Gents leading 2-0 on their way to an eventual 19-12 (F/7) triumph. Amid blustery and cool conditions, the navy and white were defeated in the final game, 16-4 (F/9). Dallas battles Trinity this week -- Friday (7 p.m.; 1x9) and Saturday (1 p.m.; 1x7, 1x9).
Schreiner went 0-1 on the week, dropping to 11-13 (2-1 SCAC) on the season; Mountaineers were led by senior catcher Chase Valdez and sophomore pitcher Matt Barnett. Mountaineers look to get back on track and continue their conference success with a nine game home stand, starting with Austin College on Friday at 2pm.
Southwestern dropped a three-game SCAC series to NCAA No. 2 Trinity over the weekend. The Pirates were led during the week by Charlie St. Clair who hit .375 with two doubles and two RBIs. St. Clair and Colten Shea were the only two Pirates to hit over .300 for the week as Shea also stole four bases – tying a Southwestern single-game record – against The Cru on Tuesday. Southwestern was unable to overcome early deficits each game including a one-run mid-week loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday. The Pirates sit at 1-5 in league play and are 4-18 overall entering a three-game SCAC series at Centenary this weekend.
Texas Lutheran completed a three-game SCAC road series sweep of Austin College with 2-1, 4-1 and 6-2 victories. TLU pitching held Austin College to four runs for the entire series. On the opening day’s doubleheader, TLU received quality pitching starts from Aaron Aleman and Dwayne Snider and timely home runs from Tony Gennusa and Keaton Bohrmann in two wins over Austin College. At Austin College’s Baker Field, TLU took wins of 2-1 and 4-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play against the Kangaroos. In game one, Aleman tossed a complete game and struck out nine in seven innings. He walked just one and allowed seven hits in improving to 5-1. Aleman took the hill in the bottom of the seventh after Gennusa gave TLU the lead on a solo home run in the top of the frame. Gennusa’s homer was his second of the season. Austin made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of one-out singles to put runners at first and third. Aleman ended the game by striking out the final two Kangaroos. In game two, Keaton Bohrmann broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a two-run home run. Bohrmann’s homer, his team-leading third of the season, gave starter Dwayne Snidera 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs improved to 16-6 overall and to 5-1 in the SCAC as senior pitcher Kellen McGriff moved to 3-0 and Tony Gennusa homered for the second straight day. McGriff worked around 11 hits and three walks to allow only two earned runs in 6-1/3 innings. Conner Capdau tossed the final 2-2/3 and surrendered just one hit and a walk. He struck out two.

The Tigers opened the series with a 10-0 shutout on Friday night, then opened a Saturday doubleheader with a 10-5 win in seven innings. The series finale resulted in a 7-2 win for Trinity, giving the team a 6-0 record against Southwestern this season. The Tigers also swept a three-game non-conference series against the Pirates earlier in the year. Trinity will play four more home games this week, which will be followed by eight consecutive games on the road. The Tigers host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night, then will take on Dallas in a three-game SCAC series over the weekend. Trinity swept a home-and-home series against UMHB last season, and also took all five regular season meetings against Dallas.
