LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Texas Lutheran and #6 Trinity both opened the 2014 season with perfect 3-0 weeks against stellar competition. The Bulldogs took two games from 14th-ranked University of Texas-Tyler and another from Chapman. Trinity swept a doubleheader from Chapman before taking a single game from Texas-Tyler. After losing its opener to East Texas Baptist University, Centenary rebounded with two wins against the Tigers on Sunday.

Austin College has not opened the 2014 season
yet. They open things up on Friday, February 14th as they begin a
three game series with fellow SCAC member Schreiner University.
These will be nonconference games with a doubleheader set for
Saturday.
Centenary claimed a doubleheader sweep over East Texas Baptist on Sunday to open the 2014 season at 2-1. The Gents defeated the Tigers 5-3 and 5-1 after dropping a 10-8 decision against ETBU to open the slate. The Maroon and White received strong pitching performances from Layton Tromba and Paul Arcement in Sunday’s twinbill along with six-hit effort for the weekend from Chris Jones. Jones batted .462 in the three games from the leadoff spot and drove in three runs. Tromba tossed seven frames to secure his first win of the season. The Bossier City, La., native fanned seven batters in the complete game while allowing three runs on six hits. Arcement, the 2013 SCAC Co-Freshman of the Year, tossed seven innings in the nightcap Sunday allowing just one run on six hits with five punch-outs. Kody Carson, Michael Schimpf and Taylor Reed also joined Jones in hitting .400-plus for the weekend. Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as the Gents travel to Jarvis Christian for a doubleheader.
Dallas went 0-3 on the week. Head coach Fraser Holmes’ squad opened their season last week in Alpine, Texas, and went 1-2 (W, 3-1; L, 9-7; L, 14-7) against Sul Ross State University. Dallas’ first home series of the 2014 season was moved to Brownwood, Texas, due to snow and freezing temperatures impacting Crusader Field. On Saturday, the navy and white split (L, 9-6; W, 16-3) with Howard Payne University. In Sunday’s rubber match, the Crusaders were defeated 13-6 in nine innings. Dallas hosts East Texas Baptist University this week in a three-game home set -- Friday (2 p.m. 1x9) and Saturday (12 p.m. 1x7, 1x9).
Schreiner went 1-2 in their opening weekend at Sul Ross State. On Friday night, Schreiner won 11-9 and came back on Saturday and loss both games 16-3 and 21-1. The Mountaineers will travel to Austin College for a non-conference 3 game series this weekend.

Southwestern dropped a three-game series at cross-town rival Concordia to fall to 0-4 on the season. The Pirates dropped a non-conference game earlier in the week at Howard Payne, 6-5. The offense showed up early for the Pirates as recorded 31 hits in the four games, however big innings for the opposition held Southwestern winless. First baseman, Clayton Sparks opened the season hitting right at the .500 mark going 8-for-16, while Colten Shea’s four RBIs lead the Pirates in the first week of the season. The Pirates were also a menace on the base path tallying 11 stolen bases. Starting pitching was solid for Southwestern as Joseph Koch started twice and only allowed two runs in 10 innings of work. First-year pitcher Brett Marcom struck out five Tornados over the weekend to lead the Pirates in his only appearance. Southwestern returns to the diamond this weekend in non-conference action at American Southwest Conference foe LeTourneu. The Pirates and YellowJackets will open a three-game series on Friday followed by a double-header on Saturday.
Texas Lutheran started the 2014 baseball season with three victories at home - a 9-1 win over Chapman (Calif.) and 4-1 and 6-5 victories against No. 11/14 University of Texas at Tyler. Against Chapman, Aaron Aleman struck out seven and went six innings, and Keaton Bohrmann hit a two-run home run. At a damp and cold Katt-Isbel Field, the Bulldogs took advantage of five Chapman errors to score four unearned runs over the first four innings. The Bulldogs broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning that included the Bohrmann home run to left-center field. Bohrmann, TLU’s sophomore third baseman, drove in Derek Kanas with the blast. One at-bat earlier, Kanas singled home Christian DeBlanc for the fifth run of the game. DeBlanc started the frame with a double to right field. Aleman did not allow a hit to Chapman until the fourth. The junior right-hander struck out seven and allowed one unearned run. Against UT Tyler, Texas Lutheran completed a doubleheader sweep of the nationally-ranked Patriots at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field. In the early game Saturday, TLU senior right-hander Dwayne Snider took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and came within a batter of tossing a one-hit shutout. Snider (1-0) settled for 6-2/3 innings pitched with six strikeouts, four walks and two hits. Thomas Harwellretired the final batter with runners at the corners and the tying run at the plate. He picked up his first collegiate save. Tony Gennusa doubled, stole two bases, scored a run and collected three hits. Christian DeBlanc knocked in a pair of runs, and Zach Jacobs added an RBI groundout. In the late game, in a back-andforth affair with two lead changes and two ties, TLU’s Klaus Bohrmann broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh with a solo home run to left field. Bohrmann was one of four Bulldogs to have at least two hits in the late game.
Trinity opened its season with a 3-0 record this weekend, sweeping a two-game series against Chapman University, then finishing with a victory over #14 UT-Tyler on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers are now 14-2 in season openers under Head Coach Tim Scannell, which includes a 10-0 mark at home. On Saturday, Trinity started with a 7-4 win over Chapman, then won 5-1 to open up a Sunday doubleheader. The 5-3 win over UT-Tyler finished off the sweep. Tiger pitchers picked up saves in all three games, beginning with first-year Kevin Flores. Teddy Turner picked up both saves on Sunday, giving up one hit over 3.2 innings of the two games. Christian Muscarello is now just three hits from reaching 200 in his career, which would make him the 10th Tiger player to reach the milestone. He would also be the 36th player in SCAC history to join the 200-hit-club. Muscarello also hit his 50th career double, tying for fifth in career history at Trinity. Trinity will face former SCAC rival and 12th ranked Millsaps College in a three-game series in Jackson, Mississippi, this weekend.
