SCAC Lands Five on ABCA All-West Region Team

MOUNT PLESANT, Mich. - Five baseball student-athletes from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) were named to the 2014 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Division III All-Region Team.

Mark Carlson of the University of Dallas earned second team honors while teammate Trevor Keele, Dwayne Snider from Texas Lutheran, Chris Jones from Centenary and teammate Aaron Quintanilla all earned third team honors. Additionally, Tony Gennusa of TLU also claimed a spot on the West Region Gold Glove Team

Carlson, a senior second baseman, had nine triples in his final campaign which not only finished tied for the single-season school record, but led the SCAC and all of NCAA Division III. His other top-10 offensive statistical rankings include a .553 slugging percentage (third), 40 runs (third), a .452 on-base percentage (fourth), 78 total bases (fourth), 51 hits (fourth), a .362 batting average (fifth) and 15 stolen bases (sixth). Defensively, Carlson had 94 assists (eighth) as he was named to the All-SCAC team.

Keele, a junior first baseman, was named the 2014 SCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Keele is Dallas' first-ever SCAC offensive or defensive player-of-the-year in any sport. The Edgewood, Texas native led the SCAC with a .400 batting average, 54 hits and 46 RBI. His other top-10 statistical rankings include a .456 on-base percentage (third), 70 total bases (fourth), three triples (fourth), a .519 slugging percentage (sixth) and seven doubles (ninth). 

Snider, a senior pitcher, was a All-SCAC selection as he went 5-3 with a 1.81 ERA in 79-2/3 innings pitched. He tossed three complete games and two shutouts. He was a three-time honoree for SCAC Pitcher of the Week and a finalist for TLU Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Snider also earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors. Texas Lutheran finished their season as runner up in the SCAC, going 27-17 on the season with a 11-7 record in conference.

Jones, a freshman outfielder, was tabbed All-SCAC as he led the SCAC in hits with 58 and was sixth in RBI with 29. He led all first-year conference players in hitting (.374) and on-base percentage (.451). He was also fourth in the league in triples (3) and sixth in the league for RBIs (29). Jones added 11 stolen bases and had a slugging percentage of .452, good enough for fifth in the conference.

Quintanilla, a first-year shortstop, was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year as he was ranked in the top 10 among all players in hitting (.361), on-base percentage (.447) and stolen bases (17). He was also fourth in the league in triples (3) and walks (22) and fifth in RBIs (31). A unanimous All-SCAC selection, Quintanilla hit safely in 32 of the 38 games in which he had an official at-bat and had the longest active hitting streak in the conference at 17 games.

Gennusa, a junior outfielder, played and started in all 44 games in 2014. He hit .293 with three homers, two triples, nine doubles and 22 RBI. He also stole 16 bases. He was graded an excellent arm with excellent range by the ABCA as he had 102 putouts on the season and only one error.
