
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Dallas ended its regular season conference schedule with two impressive wins over SCAC tournament top seed Centenary College. The Crusaders won 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday before finishing the two game sweep with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College plated seven runs in the second
inning and never looked back, topping Arlington Baptist College
12-5 on Tuesday evening at Baker Field. The 'Roos are now 11-26
overall this season with the victory. CJ Adame and Austin Molinaro
started the scoring in the second with back to back RBI singles,
and Austin Vaughan, Dylan Day, Mason Leech, and Colt Herron all
drove in runs during the huge second inning as the 'Roos jumped out
to a 7-0 lead. Arlington Baptist got a run back in the third, and
two more runs scored in the top of the fourth to cut it to a 7-3
game. However, in the bottom of the fourth Herron singled home a
run and Shane Williams drove in two more to push the margin to
10-3, and after a pair of runs by the Patriots in the fifth, Austin
College added a run on a sacrifice fly by Vaughan in the fifth and
a single by Leech in the eighth to make it a 12-5 final. Herron
went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Travis Gibson went 3-for-4 with his
fifth triple of the year to lead the 'Roos offensively, while
Vaughan, Leech, Adame, and Todd Takabuki all had a pair of hits.
Marshall Korn picked up the win in relief, throwing 4.0 innings
while allowing two runs on five hits with three
strikeouts.
Centenary recorded a 0-3 week – its first three-game
skid of the season – with a loss to cross-town rival
LSU-Shreveport and then swept at the University of Dallas. Jemari
James posted a .500 batting average, including a pair of doubles
and a team-best two RBI. The Gents struggled at the dish hitting
just .230 as a team during the week long span. Layton Tromba
pitched eight innings in the 1-0 setback on Sunday to UD. Tromba
fanned six batters and surrendered four hits. Taylor Henry tossed
10 innings in two appearances and struck out eight hitters in the
combined effort. The Gents wrap up the regular season at 6 p.m. on
Tuesday at LSUS.
Dallas (18-21, 12-8 SCAC) went 2-2 on the week. Tuesday
evening in Longview, Texas, the Crusaders fell 8-7 and then 4-3 to
LeTourneau University in a pair of seven-inning games. Head coach
Fraser Holmes' squad then proceed to handle business over the
weekend against Centenary College of Louisiana. On Saturday, Dallas
honored its senior class -- Trevor Allred, Nico Caluda, Adam
Farris, Andrew Laux and Chris Schierhorn -- before triumphing 5-4
in 10 innings. Mark Carlson delivered the walk-off hit, and
Schierhorn (3-3) was the winning pitcher of record. The Crusaders
were efficient on Sunday, taking a 1-0 nine-inning decision in just
under two hours. Martin Cronin (2-3) allowed just three hits over
eight innings, and Joshua Crapps earned his first save of the
season. Dallas (No. 3 seed) will play Trinity (No. 2 seed) in the
opening round of the SCAC Championship on Friday at 12 p.m. in
Georgetown, Texas.
Southwestern (3-36, 0-19 SCAC) went 0-4 during the week.
Southwestern dropped non-conference games to Concordia (Texas) 4-2
and Hardin-Simmons, 21-2 before dropping two SCAC games to Trinity
over the weekend by scores of 13-1 and 10-4. The Pirates return to
action on April 25 when they take on No. 4 seed Austin College at 7
p.m. in the first round of the SCAC tournament at home at Rockwell
Field.
No. 13 Trinity went 3-0 last week, including a two-game
road weekend sweep at Southwestern University to finish the
conference schedule with a 15-5 record. The Tigers are 32-7 overall
this season, and improve to 14-3 on the road. Trinity will finish
off its regular season with a home game against Hardin-Simmons on
Monday night at 6 p.m. The Tigers are the #2 seed at the SCAC
Tournament this weekend, and will face off against #3 Dallas on
Friday, April 26, at 12 p.m. The winner will play at noon on
Saturday, while the loser will play again Friday night.
