LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - All five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball teams have at least one conference series under their belt as Centenary, Dallas, and Trinity are a combined 10-2 in league play through four weeks of the season.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College took one of three against nationally ranked Trinity University over the weekend, to bring the team’s overall record to 3-11 and conference mark to 2-4. The ‘Roos opened the weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Tigers on Saturday with Marshall Korn taking a no hitter into the fifth inning and earning the win on the mound. Korn finished the game allowing two runs on just three hits in 6.0 innings of work. Austin Vaughan went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win. In game two the ‘Roos fell in a 5-1 hole early and tried to rally before the Tigers added three runs late to make it a 9-4 final. Vaughan went 3-for-5 in the game to lead the ‘Roos offensively. The ‘Roos finished the weekend with a tough loss on Sunday, as the team led 5-3 in the seventh before Trinity plated four runs in that inning to make it a 7-5 final with the Tigers coming out on top. Tyler Appelquist and Jeremy Halford each had two hits in the loss.
Centenary ran its win streak to six games with a series sweep of Hendrix. The Gents edged Hendrix in hits 27-25 for the weekend, but outscored the Warriors 18-5 in the sweep. Marc Martinez and Christian Sebastien each hit .455 to lead the squad for the week while Tyler Clakley added a .444 effort at the dish. Sebastien led the team with five RBI. The Gents received solid pitcher performances on the week as Layton Tromba and Cole Thompson each recorded complete game wins. Tromba scattered seven hits of the course of his nine innings without allowing an earned run and tallying six strikeouts. Thompson settled down to allow just three hits over the course of eight innings after allowing two runs on three hits in the first frame. Thompson fanned 10 in the victory. The pitching staff registered a 1.33 ERA for the weekend and held the Warriors to a .243 batting average. Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 2 as they open a three-game series with Dallas at 1 p.m.
Dallas (8-6, 5-1 SCAC) went 3-0 on the week with a sweep of Southwestern University over the weekend in Irving, Texas. On Saturday, the Crusaders prevailed 6-0 (F/7) and then 8-7 (F/10) over the Pirates. Head coach Fraser Holmes' squad then earned their second sweep of the season with a 6-0 (F/9) win Sunday. The winning pitchers of record were Andrew Bossert (2-1), Trevor Keele (1-2) and Joshua Crapps (3-0). Keele also produced at the plate, garnering four hits (double), two runs, four RBI and three walks in the series. On the docket this week for Dallas is a three-game weekend conference series against Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, La. -- Saturday (1 p.m. doubleheader); Sunday (1 p.m. nine inning).
Southwestern (1-13, 0-6 SCAC) dropped four game last week, including a three-game SCAC series with the University of Dallas. The Pirates started the week with a 7-1 non-conference loss to Hardin-Simmons before coming up short against Dallas in two games on Saturday (6-0, 8-7). Dallas then finished off the sweep with a 6-0 victory on Sunday. Southwestern returns to action on March 2-3 when the Pirates open up a three-game SCAC series with neighboring rival and No. 11 Trinity University.
No. 11 Trinity went 3-1 over the past week,
highlighted by winning two out of three SCAC games against Austin
College to open conference play. The Tigers defeated UMHB 12-6 in
10 innings to start the week, then returned home for a three-game
weekend series with the ‘Roos. Austin College took the
opening game 4-2, but Trinity rallied to win 9-4 and 7-5 in the
next two. Trinity hit into a rare triple play in the first game,
squashing a fifth-inning rally by the Tigers. Trinity will travel
to future SCAC member Schreiner University on Tuesday afternoon,
then will continue SCAC action with a three-game series against
Southwestern University. Last season, Trinity won the regular
season series with the Pirates 3-2. The Tigers took both home
games, then stole the series with a 10-0 win in the finale on the
road. Earlier this year, Trinity defeated Schreiner 14-1 in San
Antonio.
