SCAC Has Six Named to ABCA All-Region Teams

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Led by First Team selections outfielder Pat Hirschberg, left-handed pitcher Ryan Lucero and shortstop Christian Muscarello - all of Trinity University - the SCAC had six student-athletes selected to the 2013 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Division III West All-Region Teams. Trinity third baseman Kevin Francke and right-handed pitcher Zack Speer made the All-Region Second Team, while University of Dallas first baseman Trevor Keele was named to the West Region Third Team.

Hirschberg (Parker, CO/Chaparral), a May Trinity graduate, has received a number of recent honors. He was elected to All-America Teams by the ABCA and D3baseball.com. Hirschberg was also selected for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, and was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year.

A major offensive threat, Hirschberg led the SCAC in batting average (.385), slugging percentage (.701), RBI (54), triples (seven), home runs (nine), and total bases (122).

Lucero (Aurora, CO/Grandview), a recent Trinity grad, also was named to the ABCA All-American Team and the D3baseball.com All-American Team. With a 10-1 record, Lucero was chosen as the SCAC Pitcher of the Year.

He led the SCAC in wins (10), strikeouts (80), and opponents' batting average (.209). Lucero ranked in the top five in ERA (1.98, second place), innings pitched (82.0, third place), and complete games (four, fourth place).

Muscarello (Tucson, AZ/ Catalina Foothills), a junior, led the Tigers in runs scored, with 52. He batted .377 (69-183), and accounted for 35 RBI, three home runs, and 11 doubles.

Francke (Yorba Linda, CA/Mater Dei), a Trinity graduate, led the team in doubles with 16. He hit .328 (62-189), scored 44 runs, smacked four home runs, and drove in 33 runs.

Speer (Bellaire, TX/Episcopal), a sophomore, earned All-America accolades from D3baseball.com. He produced an undefeated 9-0 record on the mound, a SCAC-leading ERA (1.51), and a league-best earned runs allowed (12). Speer was also ranked in the top five in the SCAC in on-base percentage (.459, second place), hits (67, second), walks (22, second place), runs scored (43, fourth place), and doubles (14, tied for fourth place).

All five Trinity players also were elected to the All-Region teams of D3baseball.com, and to the All-SCAC Team.

Keele (Edgewood, Texas) batted .336 in his first year with Dallas, good for eighth in the SCAC. The 6-foot-1 sophomore right-handed hitter ranked as follows in the SCAC: six home runs (second), four sacrifice flies (third), 32 RBI (eighth), 50 hits (sixth) and 10 doubles (eighth). He was an All-SCAC First Team selection.
