SUWANEE, Ga. - Southwestern came away with two impressive wins over the weekend as the Pirates took two of three from then No.1 Trinity. Southwestern won the first two games of the three game series 6-2 and 9-7 before Trinity won game three, 10-0.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College went
1-2 last week in a three game series against the University of
Dallas, falling 3-0 in game one before splitting games two and
three, taking game two 12-5 and falling 7-3 in game two. Tyler
Appelquist had a huge week at the plate, hitting .667 with two
doubles and a .889 slugging percentage and Dylan Day hit .429 with
three RBI. Josh Coughennower also had a strong week at the plate,
hitting .333 with four runs batted in, and Will Schommer added
three RBI for the week. Cullen Calabria picked up a complete game
victory, striking out three and scattering eight hits in 7.0
innings of work. Marshall Korn also had a solid outing in a loss,
going 6.0 innings and allowing only two runs on six hits in
Friday’s 3-0 game.
No. 17 Birmingham-Southern picked up three more wins this
week, sweeping Centre at home to move to 24-6 overall with their
sixth-straight win and remain undefeated in conference play at 9-0.
Junior Bruce Maxwell leads the team hitting .516 with 31 RBI, 20
doubles, and nine home runs. As of last week, he ranked first in
the nation in doubles, on-base percentage (.667), and walks (35),
second in the nation in slugging percentage (1.012) and total bases
(83), and third in batting average. Freshman pitcher Blake Stevens
is also making a name for himself on the national stage, as he was
ranked 20th in the nation last week with 51 strikeouts. The Panther
pitching staff as a whole owns a 2.67 ERA with 229 strikeouts.
Offensively, BSC is out-scoring its opponents 201-97 and
out-hitting them 294-217. The Panthers are on the road this week,
facing LaGrange on Tuesday and Oglethorpe on Saturday and
Sunday.
Centre went 0-3 on the week dropping all three games to
Birmingham Southern on the road. The Colonels fell 11-2 and 9-3
Friday and then 8-2 on Saturday to fall to 11-19 overall and 1-7 in
the SCAC. Centre will travel to Thomas More Wednesday and then play
a three-game conference series at Sewanee Saturday and
Sunday.
Dallas (17-14, 7-10 SCAC) went 2-2 on the week. After
stormy conditions postponed Dallas' nine-inning road game versus
the University of Texas-Arlington until Wednesday evening, the NCAA
Division I Mavericks bested the Crusaders, 13-3. Austin College
paid visit to Dallas for a three-game series, spanning Friday and
Saturday. Michael Schweiss (3-4) and Michael Byers combined for a
three hit shutout of the 'Roos in a 3-0 decision on Friday.
Saturday brought a (1x7, 1x9) doubleheader to Crusader Field, with
Austin College serving as home team in Game 1 to make up for a Feb.
18 rainout in Sherman, Texas, between the two squads. Though the
Crusaders led Game 1 5-1 through three innings, the 'Roos responded
with a combined 11 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to
clip Dallas, 12-5 (F/7). Dallas atoned for their late-inning Game 1
mishaps, with a 7-3 victory (F/9) in Game 2 to claim the series.
Hendrix went 2-2 in non-conference play this week.
Hendrix topped Ozarks (Ark.) 13-7 at home on Tuesday, thanks to a
pair of six run innings. Freshman shortstop Ryan Ritz had two hits
with four driven in and senior second baseman Clark Sims had two
hits, two runs and two RBI. Senior Matt Diehl went six innings,
earning the win. The Warriors traveled to St. Louis and went 1-2
against Washington University. In Friday's 6-4 loss, senior third
baseman Kyle Raskin went 3-for-4 with a triple and Sims was 2-for-4
with two RBI. On Saturday, the Bears took the first game 7-2.
Senior right fielder Nathan Harr went 3-for-4 with a double.
Hendrix salvaged the weekend with a 5-2 win in the finale.
Sophomore catcher J.T. Bowen had three hits with a double and
sophomore Collin Radack had two doubles. Freshman Nino Tutino
struck out five over 7.1 innings to get the win. The Warriors will
host Rhodes in non-conference action on Tuesday night, & then
take on #1 Trinity for a three-game series beginning
Saturday.
Millsaps went 4-0 including a SCAC sweep over Sewanee to
improve to 7-1 in the conference, 1.5 games behind
Birmingham-Southern (9-0). The week got off to a great start as Jim
Page won his 600th career game, all in a Major uniform, as Millsaps
defeated Belhaven in a Maloney Series game, 6-3. On Friday, the
Majors used two six run innings and a five running inning and the
arm of junior Will Edwards to take an 18-1 win over Sewanee.
Sophomore Wes Perkins led the way offensively going 2-for-4 with
five RBIs and two runs scored while senior Jules Roussel added a
3-for-4 day with three RBIs including a home run, a double, and a
single. Millsaps came back on Saturday and increased their winning
streak to six as they defeated the Tigers in a doubleheader 14-2
(7) and 11-6. In the first game, sophomore Zander Romano was
terrific as he improved to 4-2 on the season, pitching a complete
game while giving up one earned run off three hits with five
strikeouts on the afternoon. The Majors picked up their 20th win of
the season in Game One and now sit 21-10. Millsaps is back in
action on Tuesday as they travel to Clinton to take on the
Mississippi College Choctaws as the Maloney Series remains neck and
neck with all three teams tied at 2-2. They then welcome in Rhodes
for the weekend for SCAC play.
Oglethorpe was swept in a three game series at Rhodes
this past weekend as the squad’s one-run losses continue to
mount. Two of three defeats at Rhodes came by just one run (lost
Game 1, 2-1; lost Game 3, 6-5), giving the Petrels four one-run
losses among their last 5 defeats. At 8-20 on the season and 2-7 in
SCAC play, Oglethorpe will look to make some noise at home this
coming week with games against Piedmont, Rust (doubleheader) and
Birmingham-Southern (three-game series). The baseball team will be
embracing NCAA D-III Week by honoring the 2011 SCAC Champion
men’s soccer team at a pregame ceremony and cookout as part
of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Panthers.
Rhodes went 4-0 for games played between April 2nd and
8th. The Lynx got things going early this week with an 8-1 victory
over DII Christian Brothers University on Tuesday, before hosting
Oglethorpe over the weekend. Rhodes defeated Oglethorpe 2-1, and
8-3 on Saturday, before completing the three game sweep on Sunday
with a 6-5 victory. In the first game on Friday, junior RHP Jackson
Baker threw his 4th complete game of the year as he
limited the Petrel offense to four hits, and held them scoreless
over the final six innings. Senior RHP Austin Carden earned his
7th victory of the season in the second game, as he
worked eight innings, allowed 2 earned runs, while striking out 5.
On Saturday, freshman Andrew Wallis delivered the biggest hit of
the weekend, a pinch hit, walk-off single with two outs in the
bottom of the ninth. Rhodes will take on Hendrix this Tuesday in
Conway, before heading to Jackson, MS for this weekend’s
conference series with Millsaps.
Sewanee was swept in all four games last week. Sewanee
dropped a single game to Covenant Tuesday, before losing at
Millsaps over the weekend. The Tigers were hurt by a lack of
quality pitching last week. The Tigers’ opponents averaged 14
runs per game compared to Sewanee, who averaged 6.5 runs per
contest. Sewanee will look to bounce back this week with a pair of
midweek contests against Rust and a three-game SCAC series against
Centre.
Southwestern (10-20,
6-8 SCAC) took two of three games from No. 1-ranked Trinity at home
over the weekend. The Pirates took the first two games on Friday by
scores of 6-2 and 9-7 before the Tigers salvaged the final game of
the series on Sunday with a 10-0 win. Zachary Lynch led the Pirate
offense as he hit .455 (5-11) on the week with two RBI, two
doubles, four runs scored and added a walk in the three games.
Southwestern returns to action on Tuesday hosting McMurry before
traveling to Irving, Texas to square off with Dallas in a
three-game SCAC series on Saturday and Sunday.
No. 4 Trinity went 2-3 last week, splitting a
doubleheader at Hardin-Simmons, and winning one of three games at
Southwestern over the weekend. The Tigers lost two consecutive
games for the first time this season, as Southwestern pulled out a
pair of wins to even the season series on Friday. Trinity won the
regular season finale between the two teams, though, and took the
series 3-2 this year. On Saturday, senior right-hander Ben Klimesh
broke Trinity’s single season record for strikeouts,
recording seven in a victory over the Pirates – his 10th win
of the season. Klimesh has 122 strikeouts this season –
one better than Brian Nowell’s school record of 121, set in
1998. Klimesh needs 10 more strikeouts to break the Trinity career
mark set by Paul Stanley (1970-73), which would also tie him for
the SCAC single season record (Rose-Hulman’s Andy Cain,
1999). Trinity will open this week with a doubleheader against
Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday, beginning at 4 p.m. The
Tigers will then be back on the road for a three-game SCAC series
at Hendrix. Trinity defeated Hendrix 7-2 and 10-0 earlier this
season, in San Antonio.
