SCAC Announces 2012 Baseball All-Tournament Team

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The Birmingham-Southern Panthers, thanks to their first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) championship, placed a tournament-high five players on the 2012 SCAC Baseball All-Tournament team.

Entering the tournament as the number one seed from the East, the Panthers rattled off four wins over four days to win the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship for the first time in program history. Junior catcher Bruce Maxwell, who was the SCAC Player of the Year this season, was a near unanimous selection to the All-Tournament team after he hit .471 with two doubles, one homerun and seven runs batted in. He drove in six of his seven runs in the Panthers' 21-4 win in the championship game.

Birmingham-Southern's Jon Walker (shortstop) and Trinity's Ben Klimesh(pitcher) were each unanimous selections to the all-tournament team. Walker hit .353 with one home run, six RBI, three doubles and one triple. Klimesh went 1-0  in his only appearance while throwing a complete game. He allowed just a single unearned run while striking out eight and scattering just three hits in the Tigers' 2-1 win over Millsaps.  

Sophomores Austin Justice and Miles Nordgren, as well as first-year outfielder Zach Wagner joined Maxwell and Walker in earning all-tournament honors for the Panthers. Players were selected by the participating coaches of the event.

Justice hit .533 with two homeruns, two doubles, one triple, seven runs scored and drew three walks in four games. Wagner hit .667 with 10 hits in 15 at bats, driving in three runs and scored a run. He had a multi-hit game in three of BSC's four tournament games.

Nordgren went 2-0 I two relief appearances while not allowing an earned run in 5.2 innings on the mound. He picked up the win in relief for the Panthers' in the championship game.

SCAC runner-up Millsaps had three players named to the all-tournament team followed by Trinity (two), Dallas (one) and Rhodes (one). Trinity's Klimesh was the only player on this year's All-Tournament team to previously be named  to the SCAC All-Tournament more than once.
