DANVILLE, Ky. - Former Centre College baseball standout Jeffrey Williams will get the opportunity to continue his baseball career has he has earned a spot of the roster of the Las Cruces Vaqueros in the Continental Baseball League in Las Cruces, N.M.
Williams, a 2009 graduate of Centre, earned a spot on the roster after being invited to spring training for the Vaqueros.
At Centre, Williams played primarily in the outfield and served as the team's lead-off hitter for most of his career, but did see time on the mound as well. Las Cruces, a first year independent team this season, will look to use Williams as a pitcher out of the bullpen.
While at Centre, the three-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) player, was named the team's MVP following a senior season which saw him lead the team in batting average (.404), runs scored (37) and stolen bases (11).
He also posted a 3.48 earned run average in nine games on the mound striking out nine in 10.1 innings of work while earning a win and a save for the Colonels.
Williams is the second player from the class of 2009 to earn a spot on a professional roster. Jake Jones (Griffin, Ga.) signed with the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League last fall and will play in his first season this summer.
