SUWANEE, Ga. - The first conference contests began last week as Trinity swept three games from Austin College to improve to 6-1, 3-0 SCAC. Millsaps also had a strong start to its league schedule as the Majors improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 with wins over defending SCAC champion Hendrix.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College
dropped three games to Trinity to open up its 2010 SCAC schedule.
Trinity took the series with a 15-3 win, 12-9 win and a 12-2 8
inning victory. Earlier in the week, the ‘Roos had a game
with Northwood (Texas) postponed due to weather. During the Trinity
series, Austin College’s Andy White posted a .308 average
(4-for-13) with four runs, three RBI, a double and a stolen base.
Also pacing Austin College was Brian Buehler. Buehler tallied a
.300 average (3-for-10) with three runs, four RBI and two doubles.
The ‘Roos are back in action on Feb. 20 and 21 when they host
defending conference champion Hendrix in a single 9 inning game
each day.
Birmingham-Southern’s series this week with
Maryville (Tenn.) has been rescheduled due to the wintry weather.
The three games have been rescheduled with a single game at
Maryville on Tuesday, March 2 and a double-header at Maryville on
Wednesday, April 14. The Panthers will travel to LaGrange College
on Friday for a single game at 2:00 p.m.
Centre will open up the 2010 season with a
doubleheader at home against Earlham College, February 27 and then
travel to Maryville, Tenn. to play Maryville College Sunday,
February 28. The Colonels finished the 2009 season with an overall
record of 12-24 and posted a 6-6 record in conference play. In the
SCAC Tournament the team finished in third place, which was the
team's highest finish in school history.
DePauw is scheduled to open the 2010 baseball
season on February 20 with a doubleheader at Maryville (Tenn.). The
Tigers finished the 2009 season with a 22-19 overall mark and a
10-5 record in SCAC play. DePauw split two games with Maryville
(Tenn.) last year. The Tigers picked up a 2-1 road win then dropped
an 11-8 decision to the Scots. The teams then had a double-header
the following day cancelled due to weather.
Hendrix had a three game series at Millsaps
cancelled due to snow. The Warriors will attempt to make up the
three-game set Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Millsaps. The defending SCAC
champions will then head to Sherman, Texas to square off against
the Austin College Kangaroos on Saturday and Sunday. The Warriors
will play single games on both Saturday and Sunday.
Millsaps had all five scheduled games for the week
postponed due to a heavy snowstorm in the Jackson area. The
doubleheader at Huntingdon College has been rescheduled for Feb. 24
while the doubleheader against Hendrix College has now been
scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Twenty Field beginning at 1 p.m.
while the third game will be added to the weekend series at Hendrix
March 20.
Oglethorpe won its
only contest of the week over cross-town rival Emory, 13-8. The
Petrels out hit the Eagles 19-9 but had to hold on late as Emory
erased a 6-0 deficit to tie the game 6-6 in the fifth. The Petrels
immediately scored two runs in the top of the sixth, though, and
then put the game away in the top of the ninth. Up 8-7 entering the
inning, the Petrels got runners on second and third with nobody out
and second baseman Jake Spear drove home a run on a sacrifice fly.
Before a six-run Emory fifth inning tied it, Oglethorpe looked like
they might cruise to victory in this one. After an RBI double by
Farrey in the first, the Petrels scored four runs in the second.
RBI singles by Lofholm and Cornwell, and a two-run double by Rizzo
provided the runs to get Oglethorpe out to the big lead. Rizzo had
a huge day for Oglethorpe, going 5-for-6 with a double, five RBIs,
three runs scored and two stolen bases. Center fielder Brendan
Pilger chipped in a 3-for-5 day with a double, three runs scored
and two stolen bases of his own. The win improves the Petrels to
2-1 on the new season. Their next game will be at Piedmont on
Wednesday. First pitch will be at approximately 7 p.m. from
Demorest, Ga.
Rhodes opened its 2010 season on Sunday by
splitting a double header at Huntingdon College on Sunday. The Lynx
dropped the first game 6-3 before defeating the Hawks in the second
game. Freshman pitcher Jackson Baker kept the Lynx close in the
first game by limiting Huntingdon to one run in the final five
frames. Baker struck out five and allowed three hits. Junior Matt
Ungashick picked up the win in the second game, throwing 1.2
innings out of the pen. Senior Max Gertz picked his first save of
the season working the ninth. Junior Brent Lindsey paced the Lynx
offense going 3-9 with a double, 3 RBIs, and 3 runs scored.
Freshman Lynden Pindling went 3-5 with 2 runs scored. Sophomore
Travis Perkins was 2-6 with a double, 3 runs scored, and drove in
one. Junior Austin Marcum put the Lynx ahead for good with a pinch
hit 2 RBI double in the top of the 8th to extend the Lynx lead to
10-7. Rhodes will return to action this Wednesday against Christian
Brothers University, before traveling to Pineville, La. to take on
Louisiana College in a three game set this weekend.
Sewanee had its opening game against Piedmont
cancelled due to weather. The Tigers are now scheduled to open the
2010 season this week hosting Maryville (Tenn.) on Wednesday before
traveling to LaGrange for a weekend set Saturday and Sunday. Scott
Baker's Tigers are coming off of an 8-22 year last year and Baker
surpassed legendary Sewanee coach Shirley Majors for most career
wins in 2009. On the mound, Sewanee will look to senior hurler Greg
Bartleski for leadership and at the plate, Taylor Irwin will be
returning to repeat his .410 batting average.
Southwestern went 1-2 in games this week, braving
the tough weather conditions on the road. Southwestern defeated
Howard Payne on Tuesday 4-3 in Fort Worth. Todd Boone went 3-5 in
the game with one run and 1 RBI. In Saturday's game against Texas
Lutheran the Pirates were held hitless in game one as Brad Orosey
threw a complete game and SU fell 10-0. Southwestern scored one run
in the fourth to take an early lead but TLU posted one in the sixth
and another in the eighth to hand SU the 2-1 loss. Chris Webber
went six innings allowing two hits, one run while walking three and
striking out three.
Trinity went 4-0 last week, including a three-game
weekend sweep against Austin College to open SCAC play. Trinity
recorded its first shutout of the season on Tuesday, defeating the
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 7-0 in Belton, Texas. On Saturday,
the Tigers opened conference play with a 15-3 win in a seven-inning
game against the ‘Roos, then held off a rally by Austin
College to take a 12-9 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Trinity then won the series finale 12-2 in eight innings (run
rule), sweeping a three-game SCAC series for the first time since
the 2008 season. Trinity will host Brandeis University in three
games this week, beginning Tuesday night at E.M. Stevens Field. The
Tigers will also face Brandeis on Friday night and Saturday
afternoon.
