SUWANEE, Ga. - The game of the week was highlighted by a most unlikely Hendrix win over Trinity on Feb. 27. Trailing 12-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors scored six runs to avoid a run-rule loss. The defending SCAC champions then scored five times to win the game in the bottom of the ninth.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College swept
its three game series against Southwestern over the weekend, taking
the doubleheader by scores of 11-8 and 8-5 on Saturday before
closing out the weekend with a 6-3 win on Sunday. On Saturday, the
‘Roos got a 3-for-3 performance with two RBI and three runs
scored from Scooter Merritt and Andy White knocked in three runs
while Tyler Steed earned the victory, surrendering four earned runs
on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work in the 11-8 win. In the second
game, the ‘Roos fell behind early but jumped ahead thanks to
a three run fourth inning and Brian Buehler’s two run homer
in the bottom of the eighth closed the door on the Pirates. Buehler
went 4-for-5 in the game and White went 3-for-5 while Will Chermak
picked up the win, striking out 10 batters in 5.0 innings. On
Sunday, the ‘Roos ran their winning streak to five games with
the three run victory behind a 3-for-3 performance from White.
Birmingham-Southern continues to roll, winning
five games in the last week to improve to 7-1 on the season. Monday
the Panthers defeated NAIA Martin Methodist 11-10 in 11 innings in
their home opener. They then proceeded to sweep a weekend
round-robin with Arcadia (Pa.) University, Mount St. Joseph (Ohio),
and Huntingdon College. The Panthers began the weekend with a 13-6
win over the Arcadia Knights on Friday. Mount St. Joe gave a closer
game Saturday morning, but the Panthers took that one 7-2 before
overwhelming Arcadia again, 22-3, in the afternoon. They closed out
the weekend yesterday with a single game against in-state rival
Huntingdon, defeating the Hawks 12-2. The Panthers will look to
continue their current seven-game winning streak this weekend with
another round robin with Wabash and Adrian Colleges.
Centre's season-opening doubleheader against
Earlham College was postponed due to weather, but the Colonels did
open the 2010 season with a pair of losses Sunday at Maryville
(Tenn.). The Scots won game one 6-5 in eight innings and then also
won game two 6-5. In game one, Centre scored five runs in the first
inning on five hits, but only had one hit the remainder of the way.
Game two saw the Colonels fall behind 5-1 after two innings. They
tied the game at five, but allowed a run in the bottom of the fifth
to fall for the second time on the day. Centre, now 0-2, will host
Maryville Wednesday and then travel to Sewanee during the weekend
to open conference play.
DePauw is 3-3 on the season following a
doubleheader split with Transylvania in games played at
Louisville's St. Xavier High School. The Tigers won the opener by a
10-4 score and dropped the nightcap, 6-2. DePauw pitchers Brad
Gerlach and Elliott Ross combined to strike out 19 hitters and
allow no walks in the first game with Gerlach collecting six in
four innings and Ross totaling 13 in five inning of relief. Taylor
Hoffman paced the Tigers with four of DePauw's 14 hits, while Alex
Jacques, Jon Newman, Sam Linette and Jason Cohen each added two.
Newman and Linette drove in three apiece and Hoffman scored three.
Ross improved to 1-1 with the win. DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead
in the second inning of game two, but the Pioneers scored four in
the third and one in the fourth and eighth for the win.
Hendrix completed the weekend sweep over SCAC West
Division foe Trinity on Sunday with a 7-4 victory after completing
a 13-12 ninth-inning come back win on Saturday. Hendrix (5-5
overall/2-4 SCAC) snapped a five game skid on Saturday and Sunday's
win marked its fifth consecutive win over the Tigers bridging the
past two seasons. Hendrix rallied for 11 runs in the seventh and
ninth innings and held Trinity to just one hit in the last six
frames to post a thrilling come-from-behind at Warrior Field.
Trinity was just two outs away from earning a 12-2 mercy rule win
in the bottom of the seventh until Hendrix rattled off six runs,
highlighted by sophomore CF Aaron Bowen’s two-run triple to
right and sophomore SS Clark Sims’ two-run single up the
middle. Eric Mathis hammered a shot over the shortstop’s head
to knot the game and the left fielder bobbled the grounder to send
Harr racing home for the game winner.
Millsaps dropped its first two games of the week
on the road at Belhaven University and Huntingdon College before
righting the ship with a pair of home games against Piedmont
College. Against the Blazers, the Majors were only able to score
two runs on six hits and allowed a season-high 18 hits as they fell
11-2 at Smith-Wills Stadium on Tuesday. Millsaps headed to
Huntingdon for a make-up game on Wednesday and held a 2-1 lead late
in the game before allowing the tying run in the seventh and the
eventual game-winning grand slam in the eighth inning in a 6-2
loss. Returning home for a weekend series with Piedmont College,
the Majors pulled out a thrilling 10-inning victory by taking
advantage of two hit-batters in the tenth inning to set up Josh
Ordeneaux for the game-winning RBI with a bases-loaded sacrifice
fly to take the win 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Twenty Field. Facing
the Lions again Sunday afternoon, Millsaps found its offense
scoring 10 runs on nine hits to cruise to the 10-3 non-conference
victory.
After a 2-1 week Oglethorpe moved its record to
7-2 on the season which represents Oglethorpe’s best start to
a campaign since joining the SCAC in 1991. The Petrels finished a
two-game sweep of Washington and Lee on Monday with a walk-off,
bottom of the 9th grand slam from Joseph Parillo in his first
at-bat of the year to beat the Generals, 11-10. The Petrels trailed
Washington & Lee 10-6 entering the ninth after blowing a 6-4
lead. Matthew Cornwell got the win in relief for the Petrels.
LaGrange topped the Petrels the following day by the score of 14-7.
On Saturday, Oglethorpe topped Johnson and Wales by the score of
4-1. Cornwell threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 16
Johnson & Wales batters. The 16 strikeouts is an Oglethorpe
modern record, surpassing the mark of 14 set by teammate Mark Hoban
last year. J.J. Rizzo was 2-for-4 for the Petrels, with a home run,
a double and two runs scored. Cornwell had an RBI double to go with
his brilliant pitching performance, and was 1-for-3. The Petrels
will next be in action next Saturday, when they will face
Concordia-Selma in a doubleheader starting at noon from Anderson
Field.
Rhodes went 2-1 this week as they traveled to
Atlanta, Ga. for the Rawlings Classic hosted by Emory University.
Rhodes defeated Emory 5-3 on Friday, LaGrange 19-5 on Saturday,
before falling to York (Pa.) 8-7 on Sunday. Sophomore Austin Carden
picked up his second victory of the year against Emory, as junior
Taylor Babich improved to 2-0 against LaGrange. Sophomore Brian
Lainoff picked up his first loss of the year on Sunday. The Lynx
bullpen was dominate all weekend working 12.2 innings, allowing 10
hits, five runs, two earned, struck out nine and walked two. The
bullpen as a whole held their opponents to a .208 average and had a
1.42 ERA. The Lynx offense was led by freshman IF Nick Belisle and
sophomore LF Travis Perkins. Belisle hit .500 on the week (5-10)
with a grand slam, eight RBIs, four runs, two walks, got hit by a
pitch, and stole a base. Belisle had a .615 on base percentage.
Perkins hit .667 (6-9) with a double, three RBIs, three runs, five
walks, and stole three bases. Perkins had a .785 on base
percentage. This week Rhodes will take on NAIA opponent Union
(Tenn.) on Tuesday before having their first home weekend of the
year, hosting Marietta College on Saturday and Blackburn College on
Sunday.
Sewanee played a double header against Maryville
(Tenn.) on Saturday, and after falling 13-5 in the opener, Sewanee
hurler Logan Ray pitched a three-hitter in the narrow 1-0 loss to
the visiting Scots in the nightcap. Alan Komorowski logged five
hits on the day to lead the Tigers at the plate. He is batting .438
on the year. On Sunday, Sewanee hosted North Park and after falling
back 13-1 early, rallied to score nine unanswered runs, bringing
the score to 13-10. A double play in the bottom of the ninth with
the bases loaded ended Sewanee's rally and the visiting Vikings
took home the three-run win. Sewanee is now 0-5 and will play a DH
against Piedmont Tuesday before hosting Centre in SCAC play this
weekend.
Southwestern had a tough week on the road as they
dropped three conference games at Austin College to fall to 3-12 on
the year and 0-5 in SCAC action. Injuries continue to hinder the
Pirates as they were within one swing of the bat in all three
games, but were unable to pull out the victory. The Pirates return
home for one game on Tuesday to play host to the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor at 6:00 pm. The two teams met earlier in the season
in Belton and split a double-header. Following Tuesday night's game
Southwestern will host SCAC rival Trinity for a three game series
beginning on March 6th at 1:00 pm.
Trinity was swept in a two-game series at Hendrix
this past weekend, despite holding leads in both games. In
Saturday’s series opener, the Tigers took a 12-2 lead after
three innings and seemed well on the way to a win. Hendrix scored
six runs in the seventh to avoid the game ending in a run rule, and
then the Warriors posted a five-run ninth to steal an unlikely
victory. Hendrix then won 7-4 in game two to finish off the weekend
sweep. Trinity will take on Texas Lutheran University Tuesday
evening in San Antonio, then will be back on the road in continued
SCAC action. Trinity and Southwestern meet up for a three-game
series in Georgetown on Saturday and Sunday.
