CONWAY, Ark. - Hendrix College senior infielder
Matt Gaglio and former Warrior standout center fielder Daniel Ward
were recently named to the America Baseball Coaches
Association/Rawlings West Region Gold Glove Team for their
outstanding efforts in the 2009 season.
Gaglio and Ward helped lead the Warriors through one of the most
remarkable seasons in Hendrix Athletics history after winning the
first ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)
championship in men’s sports history and an appearance in the
NCAA Division III National Tournament.
The Gold Glove is the highest honor the American Baseball Coaches
Association and Rawlings bestows upon the nations best defensive
players. Gaglio received the award for the first time in his
career, while Ward was named to the team in back-to-back
seasons.
Gaglio started in all but three games in 2009 and spent most of
his time at shortstop (37 starts), with a few games at second base
(4 starts). He ranked as one of the best middle infielders in the
SCAC with a .957 fielding percentage, 58 putouts, 122 assists, 188
chances, just eight errors and turned 26 double plays. Gaglio was
also named to the 2009 SCAC Honorable Mention.
Ward started in all 45 games his senior year (43 at center
field, 2 at designated hitter) and was a sure out in center field.
He finished his final season with a .991 fielding percentage, 107
putouts, three assists, 111 chances and just one error. Ward made
just two errors in the outfield his junior and senior seasons.
This is Ward’s second award from the ABCA/Rawlings this
year, as he was named to the All-West Region Third Team for the
second straight season following the SCAC Championship. Ward ended
the season with a .375 batting average, .694 slugging percentage
(5th in SCAC), 60 hits, 49 runs scored (4th in SCAC), 17 doubles
(T-1st in SCAC), two triples, 10 homers (5th in SCAC), 111 total
bases (5th in SCAC), 43 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and just 15
strikeouts.
Ward’s other accolades include an NCAA D-III National Hitter
of the Week award (2009), three All-SCAC First Team nods
(‘07, ‘08, ‘09), a 2009 SCAC All-Tournament Team
award (2009) and a handful of SCAC Player of the Week honors.
