BSC's Leachman, Naramore & Ricco highlight SCAC's 13 ABCA All-Region selections

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Birmingham-Southern College's Drew Leachman, John Naramore and Brandon Ricco highlighted the SCAC's 13 selections on the 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region teams. The BSC trio all were named to the South first-team.

The league was well represented on the South team. Millsaps College's Tyler Berry (catcher) and teammate Jules Roussel (outfield) were named to the second-team along with Birmingham-Southern's Bruce Maxwell (first base) and Rhodes College's Hunter Chandler (pitcher).

The South third-team had three SCAC members in Birmingham-Southern's Sam Hill (catcher), Millsaps' Aaron Williams (pitcher) and Sewanee: University of the South's Taylor Irwin (outfield).

DePauw University's Elliott Ross (pitcher) was named to the Mideast second-team.

Trinity University's Evan Jones (first base) and Nick Pappas (outfield) were named to the West region second-team.

Ricco capped a great season by helping the Panthers to a 34-5 record and a top-10 ranking durin the season. The junior from Helena, Ala. ranked in the top-five in the SCAC in multiple statisitcal categories including batting average (2nd - .473), RBI (4th - 56), hits (1st - 79), runs scored (3rd - 55), slugging percentage (4th - .707) and on base percentage (4th - .511). He was named All-SCAC at second base back in April.

Leachman batted .433 with five home runs, 51 RBI, and 61 runs scored. He ranked in the top-five in the league in batting average (4th), runs scored (1st), hits (2nd - 71), and slugging percentage (5th - .683). The junior from Mobile, Ala. was named to the All-SCAC team in the outfield as well.

Naramore sported a perfect 8-0 record with an earned run average of 2.79. He tied for the SCAC lead with eight wins and was second in ERA. He struck out 69 batters in 61.1 innings of work (10.1 strikeouts per nine innings pitched) while throwing two complete games and yielding just a .250 opponents batting average. The junior from Vestavia Hills, Ala. was an All-SCAC pitcher in 2010.

Berry, a senior from Brandon Miss., hit .347 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI. His 10 home runs tied him for third in the conference and his 54 RBI placed him fifth in the league. He started all 40 games and tallied 13 doubles while scoring 43 runs. Berry was named All-SCAC at catcher this season.

Maxwell, the 2010 SCAC Freshman of the Year, hit .427 with 15 home runs, 61 RBI, 18 doubles, 48 runs scored and posted a solid .806 slugginer percentage. He led or was tied for the league lead in home runs and doubles while also ranking in the top five in batting average (5th), RBI (2nd), slugging percentage (2nd) and on base percentage (5th). The Toney, Ala. native also tallied 64 hits to rank fifth in the SCAC. Maxwell was named to the All-SCAC team at first base.

Roussel, a sophomore from Destrehan, La., posted a .384 average with nine home runs (5th in SCAC), 42 RBI (10th in SCAC), 11 doubles, 53 hits and 49 runs scored (tied for sixth in SCAC). He also was second in the league with a .533 on base percentage. Roussel was an All-SCAC selection at outfield.

Chandler posted a 3-1 record with a 2.80 ERA. He struck out 52 in 64.1 innings of work and also threw a complete game shutout. The junior from Gainesville, Ga. ranked in the top-10 in the league in ERA (3rd), innings pitched (5th) and strikeouts (7th). He was an All-SCAC honoree in 2010.

Hill, a junior from Mobile, Ala., hit .353 with seven homeruns, 39 RBI, 18 doubles, 55 hits, 39 runs scored and 32 walks. His 18 doubles were tied for the conference lead while his 32 walks were second in the SCAC.

Irwin batted .406 with six homeruns, 36 RBI, 14 doubles, 54 hits and 26 runs scored. He was tied for ninth in the SCAC with his 14 doubles. The junior from Brentwood, Tenn. was an All-SCAC selection this past season.

Williams, a junior from Covington, La., tallied a perfect 7-0 record in 12 starts while posting a 3.32 ERA (5th in SCAC). His seven wins ranked third in the league. Williams struck out 28 in 59.2 innings pitched. He was selected to the All-SCAC team in 2010.

Ross, the 2010 SCAC Pitcher of the Year, went 8-2 with a 2.64 ERA. He struck out 55 in 58 innings of work while limiting batters to just a .229 average. He also picked up three saves during the year. Ross ranked in the top-10 in wins (tied for first), saves (tied for third), ERA (1st) and strikeouts (6th). Ross was named to the 2010 All-SCAC team.

Jones, the 2010 SCAC Player of the Year, hit a league-high .480 with 13 home runs, 67 RBI, 14 doubles, two triples. He tallied an impressive .865 slugging percentage and posted a .579 on base percentage to plate a 1.444 OPS (on base plus slugging). The senior from Hillsborough, Calif. ranked in the top-10 of the league in hits (2nd - 71), runs scored (4th - 53), home runs (2nd - 13), doubles (9th - 14), RBI (1st - 67), on base percentage (1st - .579) and slugging percentage (1st - .865). He was an All-SCAC selection in 2010.

Pappas, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif., hit .416 with seven home runs, 58 RBI, 12 doubles, 48 runs and 14 stolen bases. He ranked in the top-10 of the SCAC in hits (4th - 69), runs (8th - 48) and triples (tied 2nd - 4). Pappas earned All-SCAC honors this past season.
