INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the first time in the
program's 101-year history, the Millsaps College baseball team is
ranked No. 1 in all of Division III by D3baseball.com,
overtaking previously top-ranked Eastern Connecticut State with a
4-0 week.
"One way or another we're going to enjoy this, " 21st-year head
coach Jim Page said. "I know the season's not over yet
and it's just a ranking, but I'm real proud of our guys and know
there's a lot of work still to be done. Whatever happens, 20
years from now we'll be able to look back and say hey, remember
when?"
Off to their best start in school history at 30-4 overall with four
regular season games to play, the Majors jumped two spots from No.
3 to No. 1 by earning 597 total points and 10 first-place
votes. They leapfrogged Salisbury (Md.) in the No. 2 spot
who grabbed 588 points and 10 first-place votes.
Millsaps has made a steady climb up the polls all season long,
going from unranked in the preseason to No. 16 in Week 1, No. 12 in
Week 3, No. 6 in Week 4, No. 3 in Week 7 and now, No. 1 on April
14.
The baseball Majors also become the highest ranked team in the
school's athletic history, as last year's football team peaked at
No. 3 by D3football.com and the 2007-08 men's basketball team was
No. 6 in the final D3hoops.com poll of the season.
"To be able to have kids that are good students first and
then good scholar-athletes, it's a compliment to show that
we're doing things the right way here at Millsaps," Page
said. "I'm really proud to be at a school where academics and
athletics are both important."
