SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity University
Tigers senior pitcher Evan Bronson of Midlothian,
Va. (The Collegiate School), was drafted by the Washington
Nationals Wednesday in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Bronson, a left-hander, was the first pick of the 29th round,
and the 862nd overall selection. He was drafted last year in
the 36th round by the Milwaukee Brewers, but elected to return
to Trinity for his final season.
He finished the collegiate season with a 5-5 record and a 4.22 ERA,
along with one save. Bronson led the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference (SCAC) in strikeouts, with 87 (20th in the NCAA Division
III), while pitching 85.1 innings. His opponents batted .276.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Bronson made the All-SCAC Honorable Mention
Team. It marked the third consecutive year Bronson was elected to
an All-SCAC squad.
Bronson's career ERA of 3.06 is the fifth best in Tiger history,
and the 271 strikeouts ranked No. 6. He amassed a career
record of 21-11, along with five saves. His 21 victories tied for
ninth place in the Trinity record books.
Trinity, led by 11th-year head coach Tim Scannell
(342-154 overall, 148-60 SCAC), advanced to its 14th SCAC
final in 18 seasons. The Tigers completed the campaign with a 24-21
overall record and an 11-9 SCAC mark.
Former Tiger shortstop Ryan Cavan, who played at Division I
UC-Santa Barbara last season, was also drafted, by the San
Francisco Giants. Cavan was the sixth pick of the 16th round,
No. 477 overall.
