JACKSON, Miss. - Thanks in large part to its first ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, the Hendrix College Warriors placed a tournament-high six players on the 2009 SCAC All-Tournament team.
Entering the tournament as the third seed from the West, the
Warriors rattled off four wins over four days to win the
school’s first ever men’s conference championship in
any sport. First-year pitcher Caleb Schallawitz held a strong
Trinity offense to one earned run over seven innings, striking out
and scattering three hits in an 11-1 seven inning championship game
win.
Evan Jones of Trinity, who hit .600 with three doubles, a homer,
seven RBI and five runs scored during the tourney, was one of three
Trinity players to earn all-tournament honors. Senior
infielder/outfielder Jordan Pennington and sophomore DH Kyle Felix
joined Jones on the team, which was selected by the participating
coaches at the event. Felix hit .550 with four doubles, six RBI and
scored 10 runs during the tournament. Jones tied an SCAC Tournament
record with 12 hits.
In the outfield, DePauw’s Justin Weiner set a new SCAC
Tournament record with six stolen bases and hit .444 with five runs
scored. Hendrix’s Nathan Harr and Daniel Ward were named to
the team after batting .389 and .286 respectively. They combined to
drive in 10 runs and score 11. Also making the team in the outfield
was Brandon Rosen of Centre who hit .467 with one double, one home
run and drove in four runs.
Second baseman Clark Sims of Hendrix was the only unanimous
selection to the team. Two shortstops (J.R. Bizzell of Rhodes &
Ben Gardner of DePauw) tied for the final spot at that position.
Rosen (Centre), Ward (Hendrix), and Weiner (DePauw) tied for the
final outfield spot.
