SUWANEE, Ga. - The symbol of conference supremacy is a
300-pound railroad bell that is awarded annually to the conference
program with the best overall sports record for that particular
academic year.
For a stretch of 12 years - from the early 1990s to the mid 2000s
- that bell (with the exception of one year -
2000-01) resided on the campus of Trinity University.
In fact, the bell was displayed prominently for so many years in
the front lobby of the Bell Center that many Trinity students just
assumed that the Center, which stands as the center of
Trinity's athletic complex, was named for the league's
300-pound all-sports award.
But after losing the bell in 2005-06 to then conference foe DePauw
University, the bell has escaped Trinity's grasp ever since as the
Tigers have finished as runner-up in the all-sports trophy
race for the last six years.
That, however, all changed this past weekend.
With spring sports victories in men's and women's
tennis as well as second-place finishes in softball and
women's track and field, the Tigers claimed their
first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
(SCAC) President's Trophy since the 2004-05 academic year. It
is Trinity's 12th overall all-sports victory.
