SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In celebration of NCAA Division III Week, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Trinity University organized a field day with student-athletes and coaches from numerous sports at nearby Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children.
Sunshine Cottage and Trinity have enjoyed a tremendous relationship over the years, and in particular, the SAAC felt strongly about involving the school in Division III Week. The inaugural NCAA Division III Week was implemented to give student-athletes an opportunity to publicize the overall experience of student-athletes in the membership’s largest division.
On Friday, April 15, approximately 30 members of Trinity’s athletic teams were in attendance at the field day at Sunshine Cottage. Included in the event were players and coaches from the men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s and women’s soccer teams, men’s and women’s track & field, volleyball, and players from Trinity’s club lacrosse team.
Players and coaches were able to interact with kids from grades K-5 at the Sunshine Cottage School, rotating among both indoor and outdoor sports to spend one-on-one time with the different teams throughout the day, combining both instruction and games.
SAAC Co-sponsor Lance Key had this to say about Trinity’s celebration of Division III Week at Sunshine Cottage:
"The emphasis for our student-athletes was to integrate their time and passion for their respective sports with their passion for community involvement. Our kids have a soft-spot for the children at Sunshine Cottage. The relationship is reciprocal on many levels, allowing our kids and staff to enjoy and benefit from our time at Sunshine as much as their children and teachers do. The relationships and experiences that come from our interaction there are of the long-term variety, and we look forward to continuing that cultivation."
