Austin College & SCAC raise nearly $1,000 for Special Olympics

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), in conjunction with Austin College and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, raised nearly $1,000 at its annual men's and women's basketball tournament through the sale of autographed basketballs from the various teams competing at the event.

For the second consecutive year, the SCAC selected Special Olympics as the beneficiary of this year’s proceeds. The NCAA Division III membership and Special Olympics announced a unique community-outreach partnership during the 2011 NCAA Convention.

“The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and its member institutions are honored to once again partner with Special Olympics as the designee of our conference’s charitable efforts,” said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry.

Austin College SAAC president Lexi Beeson presented a check to former Austin College women's basketball student-athlete Katy Williams, Greater Dallas Special Olympics program associate at the Austin College Athletics Convocation last month.

“Having one of our former student-athletes (Katy Williams) now working on behalf of Special Olympics makes it just that much more special," said Hanberry. "I want to especially thank Austin College and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Without their diligent work, this donation would not have been possible.”

In 11 years of tournament competition, the SCAC has teamed with its tournament host school to benefit a local or national charity. Since the first event in 2003, over $21,000 and hundreds of pounds of canned goods have been donated to various charities from the generous donations made by patrons of the SCAC basketball tournament.

Wilson Sports, which supplies the official basketball of the annual tournament, donated the collectible basketballs emblazoned with the 2013 SCAC Tournament logo.
