Celts split Sunday SCAC matches in Kerrville

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas split the final day of their second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend Sunday, defeating Southwestern (Texas) before falling to the University of Dallas.

With the split of Sunday's matches, the Celts (5-12) moved to 3-7 in conference play.

The Celts return home for their next three matches when they host the St. Thomas Volleyball Classic on Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12. UST opens the event when they host Louisiana College at 3 p.m. Friday.

UST 3, Southwestern (Texas) 2

St. Thomas scored seven of the last eight points in set number five as the Celts handed Southwestern only their second conference loss of the season.

Scores of the match were 25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 16-25, and 15-10.

Alaina Lanik (FR/Richmond, Texas) and Kaje Massenburg (SO/Arlington, Texas) combined for 28 kills and only two errors to lead the Celts to the win. Lanik knocked down 16 kills and committed only one error and .246 for the match; she also tallied 14 digs for her 12th double-double of the season.

Massenburg put away 12 kills against only error and hit .289 for the match. That was followed by 10 kills and eight blocks (two solo, six assisted) from Emily Jaroszewski (JR/Sugar Land, Texas).

Kelsie Walker (JR/Baytown, Texas) handed out 32 assists and tallied 34 digs in the match. Kaylyn Latin (JR/Houston, Texas) led the UST defensive effort with 39 digs. Chelsea Guerrero (JR/Katy, Texas) added 16 digs for St. Thomas, while Alysse Villadiego (SR/Richmond, Texas) chipped in 10 digs.

The Celts maintained control of sets one and three, which they won. Those two sets featured only five tie scores and no lead changes. Meanwhile, the fifth set alone featured nine ties and four lead changes.

UST ended set five on a 7-1 run, with six of those points coming on Southwestern attack errors. Jaroszewski recorded two of her block assists during that stretch, before Lanik put away her 16th kill to claim the match victory.

Southwestern (13-7, 6-2 SCAC) committed 35 attacking errors in the match, compared to only 16 for the Celts.

UDallas 3, UST 0

The Celts fought hard but were unable to prevail as the Crusaders swept UST's final match of the day.

Scores of the match were 26-24, 25-16, and 25-22.

Lanik again led the Celts in kills, tallying 10 for the match. Massenburg put away nine kills, followed by six kills from Courtney Bates (FR/Humble, Texas).

The defensive effort was also led by Lanik, who recorded 18 digs. Mariah Regan (SO/Katy, Texas) tallied 17 digs, followed by 15 from Guerrero.

Kelsie Walker handed out 19 assists in addition to 11 digs.
