PHYSICAL MATCH GOES AGAINST PIRATES IN FIRST CONFERENCE GAME AT HOME

GEORGETOWN, Texas – A quick playing, physical contest at Southwestern University on Friday afternoon went against the Pirates as they fell to DePauw University 3-2 in conference action.

DePauw jumped on the board not three minutes into the match when Gary Pett buried a ball in the back of the net after numerous deflections off of the Southwestern defense.

SU got their first good looks on a couple of throw-ins deep in DePauw territory from Alex Keller that were headed around but were eventually cleared out by DePauw’s defense. Keller followed with a shot that screamed just left of the goal in the 19th minute.

DePauw put another goal on the board and extended their lead to 2-0 on a similar goal where Pett scored in a virtually open goal off a ricocheted shot and that is how the half would end.

SU had just one fewer shot in the first half (6-7) and two more corners (3-1), but DePauw’s keeper Sprenkel recorded three saves to SU”s Nick Pierce’s 0.

After a strong start by Southwestern in the second half which saw two corners and some solid looks at goal, the Tigers’ Kamman gathered a goal kick just past midfield and dribbled through the SU defense. His shot went just past the outstretched arms of diving keeper Pierce and inside the right post to put DePauw up 3-0.

Southwestern got back in the game on a goal in the 70th minute on a header the skimmed off the crossbar and into the goal by first-year Forrest Baker (pictured), assisted by Alex Keller, to bring the Pirates within two, 3-1.

SU had some solid shots on goal including a screamer that DePauw’s keeper was able to punch over the crossbar to keep the score at 3-1, but Alex Keller pulled the Pirates within one on a feed from David Lozano and snuck the ball past DePauw’s diving keeper to bring the count to 3-2.

After a hotly contested final 15 minutes, SU’s comeback push fell short. The Pirates led in the shot count with 15 to DePauw’s 10 and had 11 corners to the Tigers 1.

Southwestern falls to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play while DePauw improves to 8-3-1 and 4-2 in the SCAC. The Pirates will rebound with another home conference match on Sunday where they will face Centre College at 10:30 am.
