Colorado College defeats Celts 3-0 in SCAC opener

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Friday with a 3-0 setback to Colorado College.

The visiting Tigers (6-4, 1-0 SCAC) scored all three goals after halftime, with the first goal from Hayden Cogswell coming less than a minute after the restart. Colorado College also scored in the 56th and 86th minutes.

St. Thomas (4-5, 0-1 SCAC) was outshot 14-9; Colorado College held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. UST goalkeeper Pedro Medrano (SO/Houston, Texas) made four saves for the Celts.

The Celts' best chance to score came on two shots in the 13th minute. Andy Garcia (JR/Houston, Texas) sent a long shot that was blocked by CC goalkeeper Keleher Felton. The rebound went to UST's Luis Bencomo (JR/Barquisimeto, Venezuela), whose shot was also saved by Felton.

Friday's match was played at AVEVA Stadium, the home of Major League Rugby's Houston SaberCats.

The Celts return to action Sunday when they host Johnson & Wales (Colo.) as part of a women's-and-men's doubleheader between the two teams. The matches – which will also be played at AVEVA Stadium – will start at noon (women) and 2:30 p.m. (men).
