Celts Fight Off Crusaders to Sweep SCAC Weekend

Celts Fight Off Crusaders to Sweep SCAC Weekend

Volleyball reached their .500 conference record with a 3-1 victory over Dallas this past afternoon. This is their fourth straight SCAC victory, propelling them to sole possession of fifth place, which currently qualifies them for the conference tournament.

Both teams opened up the match highly competitive. After trading points early and midway through the set, Dallas would only be able to pull away late with two points at the end to win 25-23. In set two, the Celts would not give the Crusaders an inch. After taking a lead early and forcing Dallas to play from behind, St. Thomas would emerge victorious with a 25-10 set victory.

In set three, the Crusaders and Celts traded points similar to set one, yet the outcome was different this time. With some clutch from the Celt offense late, St. Thomas would escape any Dallas comeback by winning the set 25-22 and taking the match lead 2-1. Then in the final set four, Dallas would keep things close with St. Thomas. However, the Celt defense would hold and limit the Crusaders to nine kills on 42 swings and keep their hitting percentage to a low of .048. With a 25-20 set four victory, St. Thomas would win the match 3-1.

Offensively, both Paige Havel and Alyssa Ajlouny led the team with 12 kills apiece. Emerson Sykes had herself a day with 29 assists across the floor. All while the SCAC Service Ace leader Audrey Cataline tagged four service aces in the match. Defensively Kara Spice and Cataline led with 19 and 18 digs respectively.

Up next, Volleyball looks to continue their hot streak against Southwestern on Tuesday. Tune in as the Celts travel to Georgetown!
