Cobb's goal lifts Tigers past Southwestern

Senior midfielder Trevor Cobb scored on a direct kick in the 30th minute to lift Colorado College to a 2-1 victory over Southwestern University in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Washburn Field.

Cobb drilled a laser shot into the upper right corner, just over the fingertips of sophomore goalkeeper Nick Pierce to the delight of nearly 350 fans. It turned out to be the eighth game-winning goal for the Colorado College captain.

Freshman forward Matt Fechter gave the Tigers a brief 1-0 lead when he tallied his first collegiate goal off a Jordan Reese corner kick 21:51 into the game. Fechter settled the ball, spun to his left and sent the shot inside the far post from 15 yards out.

It took the Pirates just 40 seconds to answer. Freshman midfielder Charlie Schreck took a feed from senior forward Josh Spencer and slipped a shot past CC's Brian Engle from 12 yards out.

Engle finished with three saves and squared his season record at 2-2-1. Pierce made six saves for the Pirates.

The Tigers finished with a 16-10 advantage in total shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

Colorado College plays host to Trinity University on Sunday at 1 p.m. That game was moved up one hour to accommodate TU's travel schedule.
