Colorado College edges men's soccer, 2-1

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to visiting Colorado College in non-conference action at Rolf Mellby Field on Friday evening.

Colorado College (3-0) broke open a scoreless game with a goal in the 52nd minute by Alexander Ward and got a late insurance goal from Kevin Peterson in the 88th minute. Down by two late on, St. Olaf (2-1-0) got goal in the final minute on a free kick by sophomore Hakeem Morgan but ran out of time in its search for an equalizer.

The Oles had a 55-45 edge in possession in an opening 45 minutes that saw the teams combine for three shots on goal. Morgan had the best scoring chance of the half for either team when he lobbed the ball towards an empty net in the 25th minute, but a Tigers' defender cleared the ball off of the line for a corner.

It took until the 52nd minute for the Tigers to break the deadlock when Ward turned a hit a left-footed shot into the top-left corner from outside the box, giving the visitors the lead.

Sophomore Clemente Arcuch Puig nearly tied the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute for St. Olaf, but Keleher Felton got down to deny the midfielder's effort from around the penalty spot. The score remained 1-0 until Peterson fired a shot into the lower-left corner of the goal from the right side of the box after collecting a pass from Will Sylvain with just over two minutes remaining.

Morgan gave the Oles a late lifeline with 30 seconds remaining when he bent a free kick into the top-right corner of the net from just outside the box. The goal was Morgan's second in as many games after he had a goal and two assists in Sunday's 6-0 win over Northland.

Colorado College held a slender advantage in shots (10-9) and shots on goal (5-4) in the game. Felton earned his third win of the season with two saves for the visitors, while sophomore Austin Williams picked up his first loss of the season with a three-save outing.

St. Olaf hosts No. 19 UChicago on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
