Celts conclude three-game series with Loyola

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas concluded their first home baseball series in more than 50 years Sunday as they hosted Loyola (La.)

Loyola, a strong NAIA program, improved to 5-0 on the season after leaving Houston with a 13-0 win.

Five different Celts – Hunter Pachal, Jason Brown, Nick Asaro, Leo Galvan, and Edward Guiterrez – picked up base hits for UST. Ryan Johnson pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

The Celts are fielding a varsity baseball team for the first time since 1969. The addition of baseball is coinciding with the program's move to the NCAA's Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

UST will face its first Division III opponent Friday when they host Howard Payne in a doubleheader at Baseball USA, located on the west Sam Houston Tollway. The doubleheader, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Friday, is one of two doubleheaders UST will play with Howard Payne this weekend.
